MAY 8, 1860
Vanessa strolled down the street, carefully taking in her new surroundings. Dreamville seemed to be a nice, quiet little town. She passed quite a few good looking men, all of whom smiled and tipped their hats at her, while the women scowled and made nasty remarks behind her back. Vanessa just shrugged and brushed them off. By now she was used to the comments and stares and didnt really mind them anymore.
She stopped in front of the newspaper office and leaned back against the railing. She took in a deep breath of the fresh spring air and smiled to herself, enjoying the beautiful day.
"Hi."
Vanessa looked down and found a little girl staring up at her with wide eyes.
"Why, hello sweetheart." Vanessa said to the child.
"You stay away from my daughter, yhear!"
Vanessa turned suddenly and came face to face with an angry woman, her cheeks red with anger. "Maam, I was just sayin hello."
The woman shook her head. "I read bout you and your kind comin in here to Dreamville in that paper there . . . you all aint nothin but trash thats gonna ruin this town!" The woman yelled then spit at Vanessas feet.
Vanessa felt her face burning with embarrassment and was about to turn and run when she heard a deep voice behind her.
"Is there a problem here Ness?"
Vanessa saw the womans eyes widen with fear and her face paled to a ghostly white. She turned around and found Dean, tall, muscular and intimidating looking Dean standing behind her, a menacing look on his face.
She smiled and squeezed his arm gently. "No problem at all Dean."
Dean raised a questioning eyebrow at her. "You sure?"
Vanessa nodded and turned back to the woman. "Is that all?"
The woman scowled, grabbed her daughter by the arm and stormed off, throwing dirty looks back at them as she walked away.
Vanessa laughed and looked up at Dean. "Were not the most popular people in town."
Dean nodded. "You can say that again. Look, Im heading back now, you wanna come with me?"
Vanessa shook her head as she absentmindedly picked up a copy of the Pony Express Gazette from the display rack. "No thanks, I think Im gonna hang around here for a while."
"Alright. Ill see you back at the house." Dean smiled warmly at her. "Dont let these people get you down."
"Thanks Dean, I wont." Vanessa replied. After Dean walked away she started flipping through the paper. There were a few articles about the various happenings around town, a wedding announcement for that guy that Elena was interested in, the help wanted ad for the bartender at the brothel, and finally, what she had been looking for, the grand opening announcement for Le Chateau du Joli Dames.

"Well, so much for making a quiet entrance . . . no wonder they despise us already," Vanessa said to herself as she put the paper down and headed back to the brothel. It looked like they had already made more enemies then friends. Vanessa hoped that the situation would change . . . if she had to live with Elena as her only friend she was sure she would go mad!
