JUNE 5, 1860

Ted went into the newspaper office carrying today’s paper. He was tired of not seeing his favorite article in the paper. It had been a few months since a chapter of One Heart, One Soul had been published. Several times he had told himself that it was because Jacy was new to the job, and that she was being swamped with articles. But since it had been so long, he feared that Jacy was going to discontinue the story. He didn’t want that to happen. He liked reading it before he went to sleep at night. He would fantasize about a pretty lady falling in love with him. He had visions of it being different ladies, some he didn’t know, but one of them was Jacy. He really liked her. She was very nice to him. She talked with him as a friend, not as a bank teller or just to be courteous.

"Jacy! . . . Jacy!" Ted spoke her name louder the second time, loud enough for someone outside to hear, but Jacy didn’t acknowledge his existence.

Jacy had her face resting on her hand with a pen poised in her right hand. She was daydreaming of what a real first date with Cody might be like. Now that they were friends again maybe he would ask to court her. She hoped he would.

Ted walked up to her and noticed that she wasn’t writing. "Jacy!" He said again as he touched her shoulder.

Jacy was just coming out of her daydream when she heard Ted. She looked up and smiled. "I’m sorry, Ted. I didn’t hear you come in."

"That’s ok. Are you trying to write an article?"

Technically she had sat down at her desk to write an article, but since the engagement party, she had been thinking more of Cody then anything or anybody else. "Yeah, I’m going through these articles I have. I have lots of ideas in my head. I’m just trying to decide which one to start with. But . . ." Waving her hand over the desk and standing, "I’ll deal with that later. What brings you here?"

They talked about Sarah and Buck’s story. Jacy told him that she wasn’t leaving the story out intentionally. She just hadn’t received any more chapters lately, and since she didn’t know who the author was she couldn’t find out why.

Well that cleared up the mystery for Ted. He left but not at all satisfied. He had wished that it had been his explanation for the discontinuation of the story, then what Jacy had told him. He hoped that the author hadn’t given up her story. He was wishing for a happy ending. He also wished that his story, his life, would have a happy ending.
