APRIL 26, 1861
Ted was on his lunch break. He had picked up some food from the hotel and decided to eat his lunch outside since it was such a pretty day. He went over to the PEG intending on asking Jacy to join him, but unfortunately she wasn't there. He walked down by the railroad station. The train was parked there. He sat down close to the railroad tracks to admire the big iron horse as he ate.
Looking across to the other side of the train he noticed Jesse there. Jesse was sitting underneath a big old oak tree. He must have some time off from work, Ted thought. Not all that hungry, he decided to cross over and offer Jesse his apple. Ted stepped over the coupling and walked over and said hello to Jesse. Jesse responded back in kind.
"Would you like an apple?" Ted offered him.
Jesse reached up and took it. "Thanks. Whatcha doing out here?"
"Same thing as you, relaxing from work." Ted sat down. The tree's branches spread out wide enough so that there was plenty of shade. "Ya like the train?"
"Yeah, sure. What's not to like. It will transport people far away in faster time." Jesse bit into the apple. "Very good."
"I was thinking about taking a ride on it. What about you? Tally said we could take a free ride."
"I don't know. Where would I go? Besides I have work. Teaspoon wouldn't let me take off." Jesse glumly replied.
"He might. Well, if he did where would you like to go?" Ted watched Jesse as he thought about the question.
"I think I would like to find Rose?" Jesse answered.
"Really? Do you know where she went?" Ted watched as the train started gaining momentum as it started down the tracks.
"Yeah, back East. It would be a long trip, and Teaspoon wouldn't let me go." Jesse remarked.
Ted thought Jesse might be right about that. "Have you received any letters from her?"
"Yeah, several."
Ted couldn't resist asking, "Does she want you to come and visit her?"
"I think so. She misses me. Well, she said that in her last letter."
Ted noticed that his voice conveyed a different message. "When was her last letter?"
Jesse studied on a bit and then said, "About five months ago. I've wrote her though. I should be getting a letter soon. In fact I bet any day now." Jesse was trying to convince himself more than he was trying to convince Ted. Ted realized that.
"Hi Jesse, hi Ted," Marta said as she walked up to them. "Jesse, Blythe told me you were expecting a letter. So look what I got?" Her hand swung out from behind her back and held up a letter. Jesse immediately got to his feet. He knew Rose hadn't forgot about him. Marta handed him the letter.
Jesse tore open the letter and began to read, but before he was finished, he was hurting inside. Rose had found another beau. Jesse was heartbroken. He tossed the letter to the ground and stepped on it. Then he ran off.
Ted saw Marta's quizzical expression. "I don't know what's wrong." Ted got up and went over to the letter and picked it up.
"Do you think you should look at that?" Marta asked.
"Well, we won't know what's wrong with Jesse unless we do." Ted read the letter and then passed it over to Marta. They both felt sorry for Jesse.
