JANUARY 19, 1861

Ted had awoke earlier this morning than usual, so that he could go riding with Marta before they both had to be at work. She was doing well, but she still wasn't all that confident in riding alone. He had never told her that he was the one who had gave her the chestnut mare. He was afraid if he admitted it that she would return the gift to him. She had named the mare, 'Surprise.'

They had rode not too far from town. Marta was afraid that if they went too far from town, and if she got thrown, that she would have a long way to walk back to town. Being the sweet gentleman Ted was, he didn't mind staying close to town.

Now after his morning ride with Marta, his slow day at the bank and helping out in the kitchen of the hotel, he was dead tired when he walked into his hotel room. So when his foot struck something on the floor it slipped out from under him, and he fell on his tush to the floor. Ted yawned and then looked around to see what he had stepped on. The moonlight shinning into his room lit it enough for him to see the envelope a few feet from him. He crawled over and picked it up. Putting his feet under him, he lifted his self up. He walked over to his lantern, lit it, sat down on his bed, and laid the envelope next to him. He then proceeded to take his boots off and then his clothes that he draped over a chair. He grabbed the envelope, pushed the covers back and crawled into bed.

With his fingers he opened the envelope and began to read. After reading the poem, he shifted his eyes back to the top of the paper and reread the note.

Hi Ted, Meet me at Dead End Canyon at 8 p.m. Feb. 14th. Please don't tell anybody about us. Love, Cupid Caper

He turned off his lantern, shut his curtain, and as Ted drifted off to sleep, he wondered who Cupid Caper could be. And could he make it to the canyon and back to the dance before the graduation ceremony, but before his brain could generate any answers, he fell fast asleep.

The next morning while getting ready for work Ted was still trying to figure out who could have sent him the Cupid note. He wished it was Jacy, but somehow he didnt really think it was from her. On his way to the bank he stopped in front of the newspaper office and slipped a piece of paper in the suggestion box for the name of their square dancing club.
