APRIL 23, 1860

Sheriff Teaspoon and Dev were having a wonderful time. The food was great and in between contests, they wandered about talking with folks. Teaspoon had decided not to enter any of the contests, but he did cheer Dev on when she entered the sack race. And when she was surprised that she came in second, Teaspoon congratulated and told her the winner needed a celebration dinner, and he asked her if she would accompany him to the Silver Spoon this evening. Of course Dev agreed. She already knew about Meg and Luke’s surprise engagement party.

Instead of entering the contests Teaspoon would just officiate over them. He was surprised later in the day when Cody and Jimmy were playing ‘Tug of War.’ No one had told him about that being in the picnic’s agenda. He felt good of having the honor of starting the races and contests by shooting off his gun into the air, but wondered why no one had informed him of the 'Tug of War.'

Caller Bob stood up on a wagon and started talking, but everybody was in several different groups discussing things and ignoring the mayor. Jacy saw that Caller Bob was trying to talk to everybody and knew that he needed help. She started walking closer to the wagon to try and hear what he was saying.

While moving Jacy glanced around. Noticing Tyson just off her beaten path by a few feet, she veered to the left and touched his shoulder. As he turned to her, she asked, "Could you help Caller Bob? He’s trying to tell everybody something, but no one is paying attention."

"I think I can be of some assistance." Tyson went up to the wagon and whistled very loud. Jacy had followed him and was near the wagon. She smiled at him and Caller Bob as everybody hushed up. "There you go mayor." Tyson moved over to the other side of the wagon to stand beside Jacy as everybody listened.

"I wanted to announce the winners of each event. In the horse race Jimmy won first place, Cody second place and Lee third place. In the sack race Melissa took first place, Destiny came in second and Dev took third place. In the three-legged race Buck and Corey won first place, Kid and Blythe have the honor of second place and Rose and Jesse came in third place. The last event was the wood chopping contest and Joshua won first place with Justin taking second place and Steven winning third place." Caller Bob glanced around at his audience and then said, "You can all pick up your first, second and third place ribbons from me. I have them right here, so come on up and get them."

The winners started moving towards the wagon. After receiving their ribbons they all went back to where they had been. As Jimmy and Lee arrived back to their same spot, Cody started in on him. "How could you steal my poem and give it to Jacy to print in her paper?"

For the thousandth time Cody I didn’t steal your dang blasted poem, and I intend to tell Jacy that it isn’t mine, too."

"OH, I’m sure you are! Then how did she get it, Jimmy!"

"I don’t know." He shook his head in frustration. "Why don’t you ask her?"

They continued to bicker. Cody was so angry about the whole incident that he was ready to take Jimmy’s head off. Every minute it was getting closer and closer to a gunfight until Melissa stepped in to stop it. Melissa knew how much Jacy detested fighting of any kind, especially gunplay, and she didn’t want Jimmy to do anything that Jacy wouldn’t like.
