INTRODUCING TEASPOON! |
| It was a cold, bitter day and dressed
warmly Teaspoon was lazily soaking up the peacefulness this fine Saturday morning. He was
thinking back to the good old days when he used to travel around the country-side breaking
broncs, mending fences, driving cattle, bartending, bouncing drunks out of saloons on
their heads. He had done it all. Wisdom came with experience and Teaspoon was one wise old
coot. Now he had some young ones to pass on his sage experience to, especially the young lad who calls himself James Butler Hickok, but Jimmy to his friends. Jimmy is somewhat wild and reckless and Teaspoon knew he would need to keep a tight rein on that boy otherwise Jimmy might get himself in a whole heap of trouble. The other pony express riders he had just hired two months ago seemed like they might do all right. Time was the key. It seemed to have a special magic all its own. And in time maybe they would learn to become one big happy family. Teaspoon watched out of the corner of his eye as his young protege escorted two young gals into the newspaper office. He then followed Walters trek over to the same place. That might not turn out to be such a good situation. Teaspoon might just have to work his way over there to keep his eyes on both Jimmy and Walter. Jimmy was the easiest of his pony express riders to rile up and Teaspoon knew every time him and Walter got around one another that Jimmy would start to boil. That Walter just rubbed Jimmy the wrong way. It must be Walters cunning persuasiveness or what his protege called pushiness. Teaspoon chuckled to himself as he pushed himself up and out of his chair that was in front of the jailhouse. But just when he was about to take a step forward to his destination, he saw Walter leaving the establishment. He watched as Walter made a beeline for the restaurant. As Walter made his way across the road he waved at Teaspoon and Teaspoon nodded at him. Shortly thereafter Jimmy came out of the newspaper office. Jimmy grabbed a big parcel out of the wagon and delivered it to the post office. Someone at the post office would sort through the mail and make sure it got to its rightful owners. Next Jimmy unhitched Sundancer and as he galloped out of town he nodded at Teaspoon and Teaspoon waved back. It wasnt much longer after Jimmy left that the two gals came out and while chatting they strolled over to the restaurant. Teaspoon decided to go to the station, and find out from Jimmy who the two new visitors are, and also to have some of Rachels fine cookin. Later that afternoon Teaspoon rode back into town. He knew everything would be fine in town for the few hours he had been gone. They hadnt had any bank robbers at all but of course the town was really new, only eight months old. The only ruckus so far had been a couple of barroom fights which Teaspoon had the pleasure of throwing a few drunks into a jail cell to sleep it off. Teaspoon watched as Jacyella moved their wagon down the street and turned right. He then decided it was time to make their acquaintances. He walked over to the newspaper office and watched as the little girls, Melissa, smile turn into a frown as he approached. Melissa saw the man coming her way and she was determined to make lots of new friends in Dreamville. Melissa liked having lots of friends to talk to. But when Melissa noticed the man wearing a badge, she quickly told herself that this man wasnt going to be a friend of hers. Due to the lack of cooperation from their hometown sheriff she figured all lawmen were no good. Her smile vanished and she backed up to the doorway of the office. "Howdy missy! How are you today?" Teaspoon asked as he came up to stand in front of Melissa. Melissa froze because she didnt know what to say or do. She just wanted the sheriff to leave. Meanwhile Jacyella had parked the wagon out back of the office. It would be a shorter distance for her and Melissa to bring their things inside. As Jacyella was making her way through the office, she saw a man in front of their place. Scared for Melissa Jacyella picked up her pace and flew out the door to step in between Teaspoon and Melissa. "Whats going on here?" Jacyella sternly asked the man. Melissa didnt say a word. "I was just about to introduce myself, maam. Im Sheriff Teaspoon Hunter." He gave them one of his most charming smiles in hopes to put them at ease. Jacyella didnt like lawmen any more since the sheriff back home didnt help them find their mother. But since they were going to be living in Dreamville, she didnt want to be on the sheriffs enemy list if she could help it. "Im Jacyella Hagan and this is my sister Melissa. Did you need something sheriff?" "Please call me Teaspoon. It seems like I already know you since Jimmy told me a little about you. Im sorry about your horse, maam." Jacyella just shrugged it off. Upon hearing Jimmys name, Melissa became animated once again. "You know Jimmy?" Teaspoon could see the little girl was infatuated by Jimmy. "Yeah, I know him. He works for me." Surprised Melissa exclaimed, "Hes the deputy! I thought he was a pony express rider?" "Well, he is a deputy on occasion but I was referring to the pony express. Jimmy delivers the mail and Im also the foreman for the pony express station." Teaspoon explained. "Is the station far? How far is it? When does he deliver mail? Does Jimmy have a gal?" Melissa rapidly fired the questions at Teaspoon. "Melissa Ann!" Jacyella gave her a disapproving look. Teaspoon just smiled and said, "No! Not too far! Whenever its his turn. And No!" "Well, if youll excuse us sheriff we have lots to do." Jacyella grabbed her sisters hand and pulled her inside. Teaspoon said goodbye as Melissa waved to him. Teaspoon whistled on his way back to the jailhouse. That little girl had a crush on Jimmy big time. He just hoped Jimmy would be able to let her down easy and not break such a young girls heart. Melissa watched as Teaspoon crossed the road to the jailhouse. He might be the sheriff but hes also Jimmys boss and friend, so Melissa knew she would have to become friends with the sheriff. That way she could wheedle information out of him about Jimmy. Jimmy would make the perfect boyfriend and she wasnt going to let him slip through her fingers. It might take a lot of work but she thought she could pull it off. |
