OCTOBER 8, 1860
Teaspoon decided to ride out to the waystation. He had an idea that might cheer Cody up. As he rode up to the bunkhouse, Cody was sitting outside reading a book. "Good evening son,"
"Hello Teaspoon," Cody said without looking up from his book.
"Son, I was hoping I could get you to do me a favor." Teaspoon said as he dismounted.
"Sure Teaspoon what is it. Do you need me to make a special delivery?" Cody asked.
Teaspoon knew that Cody had been doubling up on runs lately. He also knew he was doing it in order not to have to think about Jacy much. "Well, ya see, my niece is new in town. And shes making a costume to go to the party. Pretty much everybody is going with somebody. Rachels going with Steven, Noah and Ivy, and Kid and Blythe are going. I on the other hand need to stay in town, so I cant take her myself. So I thought that you might be willing to take her for me." Teaspoon waited for his answer.
"I wasnt plannin on going, Teaspoon. Im not in the party mood." Cody replied. "Cant you get Jimmy to take her?"
"No, him and Lee will be on a run." Teaspoon replied.
"What about Lou?" It escaped Codys lips before he knew it. To cover up for his mistake, Cody immediately suggested Ike.
"I guess I could ask him, but I thought of you first. I dont think Grace knows sign, and I thought she would be more comfortable with you. You wouldnt have to stay long or even dress up." Teaspoon rubbed his chin and when Cody didnt say anything. He continued, "Well, I guess Ill ask Ike. Do you know where he is?"
Cody laid his book down. "Ill take her."
"Are you sure?" Teaspoon didnt want him to feel obligated to take her. He didnt think Grace would like that.
"Ill do it Teaspoon. I guess Ill go to town and ask her if she would like to go." Cody said as he stood up and walked down off the porch.
Teaspoon grinned. He was glad the young lad would take his niece. Maybe somehow it would help him to start healing. "Hey son, dont tell her that I suggested it, ok?"
Cody nodded. He went and saddled Prankster. He didnt ride Trixsy much anymore. He just couldnt stomach looking at her for he had given her to Jacy, and as long as he didnt ride her, his belief that one day Jacy would return stayed alive.
Cody dismounted in front of the boutique. He slid off his horse, pulled the reins over the horses head, and swung it around the post. "Good morning, Grace." Cody said as he entered.
"Good morning Mr. Cody." Grace replied.
"Please just call me Cody, maam." Cody scanned the boutique. The last time he was here, he had bought a suit for the Valentines dance hoping to have Jacy as his date. They had gone through some rough times but had finally found each other. It was amazing. He hadnt even kissed her. Many times he had tried, but they had always been interrupted.
"Is there something I can help you with?" Grace watched as Cody glanced around the place. Codys eyes rested on a dress that looked similar to the dress that Jacy had worn to Luke and Megs engagement party.
"I thought I would stop in and see if you had a date for the costume party." Of course Cody knew that she didnt, but he didnt want to come right out and ask her.
"No, I dont have a date. I dont know very many people here, and most everybody has a date for the party."
"Well, I dont. Would you like to go with me?" Cody said as he leaned against the counter and starred into her beautiful blue eyes.
"I would like that Mr. . . . I mean Cody. What costume do you plan on wearing?" Grace asked to cover up her blushing.
"Well, I hadnt planned on wearing a costume." Cody replied.
"Heres the list that Meghan gave me. Maybe you might see something on it that you like." Grace handed him the list.
To please her Cody took it and read over the characters on the list. "What are you going as?"
"I decided to go as an Angel." Seeing the puzzled expression on his face, Grace elaborated, "You know with wings and a halo." And she flapped her arms to express wings. She abruptly stopped when she realized that she must look funny doing it.
Cody grinned. "Thats nice. What about this one, this Sir Brave Robin, has anyone chose it yet?"
"No, no one has." Grace answered.
"Then would you make me that costume, please?" Cody politely asked.
"Of course, let me get your measurements." After doing that Grace told him to stop back in a few days, and she would have it ready for him.
"Much obliged, Miss Grace." Cody tipped his hat and left.
