MAY 15, 1860
Sheriff Teaspoon strolled down the calm street of Dreamville. This had to be the most peaceful town in the whole West. He was very pleased that his town was safe and clean for the respectable citizens. He spotted Melissa coming out of the PEG, her home and co-business. He waved and Melissa came walking toward him. As Melissa was approaching him, he walked towards her. "Howdy Miss Melissa. Lovely morning isnt it?"
Melissa nodded. "Yes, it is. Sheriff I was wondering if you saw Caller Bobs ad in the paper yesterday?"
"Yeah, I did. About the square dancing classes right?"
"Yeah, thats it. We dont have anyone signed up for it yet." Melissa
frowned.
"Give the people some time. Im sure youll get somebody to take classes." Teaspoon said to give her faith.
"How about you signing up?"
"But I already know how to square dance."
"I know that, but you could volunteer to help the students." Melissa gave him her most charming smile.
Teaspoon pulled on his suspenders and grinned. "I could do that."
"Great, so its ok if I put your name on the list?"
"Sure, go ahead."
"Do you think Jimmy might join?"
"He might, but I thought you liked Michael?"
"I do, but Jacy doesnt have a beau." Melissa winked at Teaspoon.
Teaspoon chuckled. "Youre trying to be a little matchmaker arent you? But you know sometimes people arent right for one another and they may like someone else."
"Maybe and maybe not, maybe they just dont know that theyre right for each other yet and will find out if they just give it a chance." Melissa had a mission and that was to get Jacy and Jimmy together. And she would stop at nothin until it happened. "Goodbye sheriff." Melissa walked on down the street while Teaspoon shook his head. He wasnt sure what was going to happen, but he knew that when all was said and done that there was going to be one very disappointed thirteen year old in town.
Later that evening while the young riders were eating their supper with Teaspoon at the head of the table, Teaspoon brought up the square dancing classes. "You know Caller Bob is going to be starting square dancing lessons. You might want to think about signing up." Some of the boys snickered. He continued, "It would be good exercise plus lots of pretty ladies. Ive signed up to be a volunteer helper for the students."
Cody grinned, "What pretty girls?"
"Well, I know Jacy and Melissa are going to help the students.
Cody finished swallowing his biscuit. "Jacys going to be there?"
"Yep!"
"When is it? Where is it?" Cody eagerly inquired.
"Its at Caller Bobs ranch, and Jacy has the sign up sheet at the PEG." No more was said about it, but as soon as Cody whoofed down his supper and not even asking for seconds, he got up to leave.
Surprised Rachel asked "Cody are you sick?"
"No, Im fine, Rachel. Im going to ride into town."
"Love sick is more like it," Lee said.
"Id say hes going to sign up for those square dancing lessons." Jimmy grinned and so did the others.
"So what if I am, Jimmy? You heard Teaspoon, its good exercise."
"Yeah, I also heard him say pretty girls . . . Jacy!" The fellas snickered. Cody ignored Jimmy and left.
As Cody entered the PEG he saw Jacys discouraging face sitting at her desk. Cody walked over to her and said, "Hello."
Startled that Cody was there and she had just been thinking about him, Jacy jumped up. In the process of getting up Jacys arm hit her papers and they went flying willy nilly all over the floor. Her faced dropped another notch. How could she be so clumsy . . . not now . . . not now in front of Cody.
"Here let me get those." Cody said as he stooped to retrieve the papers.
"Oh no, I can do that." Jacy quickly stooped too, but as she did her head knocked into Codys head. "OH!" She reeled back and so did Cody.
Cody grinned at her as she rubbed her head. She stared back at him. They were very close. Their heads started leaning closer together until they were only about five inches apart.
Jacy had the feeling that he was going to kiss her. She wanted him to and this time she wouldnt get mad. She had been dreaming of this moment for so long, and now it was about to happen. She had butterflies in her stomach, and her head was so light-headed that if it wasnt attached securely it would roll right off right now. She was so nervous that part of her didnt want him to kiss her for fear that he wouldnt like it.
Codys heart was pounding something furious since they were so close. Those lips, those beautiful succulent lips were so ripe for the taking and so close. He desired to press his lips against hers. Cody was about to move away because he didnt want to press anything and get Jacy mad at him again.
Excited and warm all over Jacy sensed that he might back off due to their previous history, so she moved her head closer hoping that he would realize that she wanted him to kiss her.
As he was about to draw back Jacy moved her head in closer, so close that her lips was only about an inch from his. She smiled at him, and he touched his lips on hers cautiously for fear that he might be misreading her actions.
Jacy thought it was so sweet that Cody was being cautious and to show him that he didnt need to be she touched her nose to his. As Cody was about to give in and kiss her, Melissa came from their bedroom to the office and said, "Jacy!"
As Cody was just leaning closer to kiss Jacy, she jerked back and stood up. "Yes!" She brushed down her dress and tried to look innocent.
"What are you doing?
"Uh . . . UM! My papers fell and I was picking them up."
"Im helping." Cody supplied as he planted some papers on the desk.
Melissa was looking suspiciously at Jacy, and Jacy didnt like her accusing face, so she ducked down and retrieved the rest of the papers. "Why are you here, Cody?" Melissa sounded as though she was interrogating a prisoner.
While keeping his eyes on Jacy and not realizing the tone of voice Melissa was using he said, "I came to sign up for square dancing lessons." Jacys face lit up. She had been hoping that Cody would take lessons. Jacy immediately grabbed the sign up sheet and handed it and a pen to Cody. "So Im first, huh?"
"Yes, you are, but Melissa, the sheriff and I are volunteering to help the students." Jacys eyebrows went up, and she gave Cody a beaming smile. Cody smiled back.
"Yeah, well if some more dont sign up we wont have a class." Melissa stated in a sour tone.
"Im sure more people will sign up." Jacy didnt want to think about the class being cancelled now that Cody had signed up.
"Im sure more will." Cody state matter of factly as though he was wised to some priviledged information that they didnt know about. "Well, I have an early run in the morning, so I better get goin."
"Ill walk you to the door." Melissa said right before Jacy was going to say the same thing. Nevertheless Jacy followed both of them to the door.
Jacy waved goodbye to Cody, and after mounting Prankster, Cody tipped his hat to the ladies, smiled and rode off. All the way home the only thing Cody could think of was Jacy and their almost first kiss.
