FEBRUARY 14-15, 1860

Melissa came tiptoeing inside their bedroom. She didn’t want to wake Jacy. Jacy wasn’t asleep, but she pretended to be. She didn’t want Melissa to think she had been waiting up for her. Melissa was growing up, and Jacy knew that Melissa wanted to be treated as an adult and not as a kid.

Melissa sheds her dancing attire, pulled on her nightclothes and climbed into bed. Then it hit her. She had left the bear in Jimmy’s buggy. Oh, gosh! Now what would she do? Should she sneak out and go get it. If Jacy found out, she would be in big trouble, worst yet if Jimmy saw her, then her plan wouldn’t work.

She tossed and turned trying to decide what to do. Maybe she could sneak out to the station before going to school and hopefully no one would see her. Pretending to wake up Jacy asked, "Melissa is something wrong?"

"No sis, I’m just . . . just wound up and having a hard time falling asleep." It wasn’t the whole truth but it wasn’t a lie either.

"Well, please stop moving around. I can’t sleep if you’re doing that." Melissa quieted down, at least now she couldn’t leave to retrieve the bear. About forty minutes with her plan all set in her mind, she finally fell asleep.

Unfortunately, the next morning Jacy had to ride Melissa to school, even though Melissa tried to talk Jacy into letting Melissa drop her off at Caller Bob’s and then she could ride Braids to school. But Jacy wouldn’t agree and Melissa couldn’t think of a good reason, so now Melissa would have to think of a new plan. After dropping Melissa off at school, Jacy rode over to help Caller Bob clean up his place from the dance last night.

That morning Teaspoon was at his desk writing a letter. Caller Bob had told him the prison that Fred Potter had been in, but with helping Caller Bob and other residents of the town to get ready for the dance last night, he had forgotten all about it until Caller Bob had mentioned it last night. So Teaspoon figured it was about time for him to write and notify the officials that Mr. Potter was no longer in the land of the living. Several times he started to write the letter, but he was stopped by his friends, passing by and sticking their heads into his office to say hello. Finally, he got up and closed the door. He sat back down and put pen to paper.

                    Constable Dokins,

Bob Sitzler is now residing in Dreamville. Fred Potter tried to kill him and my deputy intervened.
Regrettably I would like to inform you that Mr. Potter is dead.

                                                        Sheriff Teaspoon,
                                                        Dreamville, Nebraska

Teaspoon folded the letter and inserted it into an envelope. The he walked over to the post office and delivered it into Blythe’s hands. "Good morning, Miss Blythe."

"Good morning, Sheriff Teaspoon." Blythe replied.

"Did you have fun last night?" Teaspoon inquired.

"Oh yes, Kid is a perfect gentleman and very sweet." Blythe smiled as she recalled last night.

"That’s Kid. You couldn’t have picked a nicer boy to date. Well, I’m heading out to Caller Bob’s to help clean up." Actually he was heading over there more to supervise the Pony Express riders that would be there.

"I would have volunteered, but I have to work."

"I understand. Besides some of the Express riders will be there, so I’m that will be enough people."

"Will Kid be there?" Thinking that she might be able to close shop for an hour or two to help out.

"Nope, he should be out on a run about now." Teaspoon said as he started to the door. "Have a good day, Miss Blythe."

"Thanks and you too." Blythe said louder than she normally spoke as Teaspoon walked out the door. Teaspoon crossed back to the jailhouse, mounted Banter and rode out to Caller Bob’s.
