AUGUST 12, 1860
With hands clasped behind his back Tally walked over to the post office. He was expecting a letter and hoped that it would be in today. As he walked into the general store and up to the counter, he greeted Cody and Javier.
"Howdy Tally, how's Jacy's house coming along?" Cody asked.
"It's almost done." Tally replied without saying anything more as he starred around the store.
"I heard Jacy say that she might move in some time next week." Javier stated.
"She might." Was the only response Tally gave. "I need some bullets." Tally said as he looked at Cody, Jacy's beau. He didn't like Cody at all. For some reason Cody rubbed him the wrong way. He wasn't quite sure why. Cody got along well with everybody, especially the ladies, but Tally thought he was some sort of con man after something. Cody was always flattering the ladies, and Tally just knew that he was going to break Jacy's heart sooner or later.
When Tally had first come to Dreamville he couldn't have cared less what happened to Jacy. In fact he had wanted to destroy Dreamville. His railroad was heading this way, and Dreamville was right smack dab in the middle of its path, but now his heart had soften towards the people and he liked living here in Dreamville.
After purchasing his bullets and tucking them into his pocket, he walked into the post office. He watched Blythe sorting mail for a few minutes before clearing his throat to get her attention.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't hear you come in." Blythe smiled as she gave Tally her full attention. She knew he had sent a letter off a few weeks ago, and he had been in several times to see if had received any mail. "Guess what?" Blythe asked.
Tally studied the beautiful lady's smiling face and then asked, "What?"
Blythe held up an envelope. "You have mail."
Tally walked closer and holding out his hand, Blythe placed it in his hand. She had never seen him smile. She wondered if he knew how. She thought that he might at least have smiled for a second when she told him that his letter had arrived, but not him. He always looked dead serious. She thought if he would just lighten up a bit then a lot of ladies might like him.
"Thank you!" Tally despondently said. He took his letter and left. Thinking what a very attractive man he was she watched him go, and then she went back to her duties.
As Tally was leaving the store Beauregard who was walking down the street saw him, and hurried over to see him. "Tally we need to talk."
Tally glanced around and not seeing anyone said to Beauregard, "Meet me out at Jacy's homestead." Then Tally continued on to the bordello and to his room.
After reading the letter he muttered, "Damn!" He then wrote a quick note to the sender.
Tracker,
What do you mean you can't find her???? Don't tell me that. She couldn't have fallen off the face of the earth. FIND HER! I want her found, and she better be alright. If you don't find her soon, I'm going to hire someone who can.
JC
After dropping his letter off at the post office, he rode out to what would be known as Starshine Ranch. As he came riding onto the property he saw the big wooden sign with the name on it that Justin had recently done for Jacy. Those two seemed to be good friends. He wondered if Justin was sweet on her. Jacy seemed to spend most of her free time with Cody, Justin and Samantha the most. He dismissed his thoughts of Jacy when he saw Beauregard waiting for him.
Tally dismounted and Beauregard greeted him. "So what do you want to talk about?" Tally asked as he sat down on a porch rocker. Beauregard stood in front of him and leaned back against the banister.
"I'll come straight to the point." Beauregard said and then paused trying to figure out by Tally's facial expression what type of mood he was in.
"Good. I like that. I don't like it when someone beats around the bush." Tally leaned back in his chair and folded his arms and crossed his feet to wait and hear what Beauregard had to say.
"Are you still planning on running the train right through Dreamville?" Beauregard's goal had been to make Dreamville a ghost town. That way the B & J Railroad could plant tracks right down the middle of the town. But since his former lover and child were living here, his heart hadn't been in the mood to continue with his shenanigans.
Tally studied his partner for a few minutes before speaking, "Why? Don't you want it to?"
"No, I don't. I've come to like this town." Beauregard replied. He owned fifty percent of the railroad and if he had to take a stand against the train running through Dreamville he planned on doing just that. There was silence and then Beauregard couldn't stand it no longer. "Well?"
"No, I thought we would reroute the train." Tally replied.
Beauregard let out a sigh of relief. "That's good."
"So if this meeting is concluded, I'll head back to town." Tally stood up and started for his horse.
"So what changed your mind?" Beauregard asked as he followed Tally.
"Lets just say that the town grows on ya." Tally evasively said without giving a specific reason.
"One other question can we stop pretending that we don't know each other?" Beauregard asked as Tally mounted.
"Well, we don't have to advertise that we know each other, but we don't have to keep avoiding each other either." Tally answered as he turned his horse around. Beauregard felt better about that.
Tally rode off first and Beauregard followed fifteen minutes later.
