MAY 16, 1861
Tally came riding into Jacy's homestead. He went up and knocked on the door. He waited a couple of minutes and then he knocked again. He was about ready to just open the door and go inside when Jacy turned the knob and pulled the door open. "What took you so long?" He immediately asked.
"Well, that's a fine howdydo. I was upstairs. I got to the door as quick as I could. What's the matter with you."
"I saw Melissa in town. Why is she staying at the hotel?"
"She is? I don't know. But I'm glad she's here and not with Jake."
"What's been going on? I haven't seen either one of you for several days and then Melissa shows up staying at the hotel."
"Come on in. I'll tell you everything." She replied. Tally followed her inside and they sat down in the living room. She told him everything from when she realized that Melissa had run off with Jake till Melissa had left yesterday to go see Jake in Two Forks. Tally just sat there for several minutes letting it all sink it.
How could he have not known that all that was taking place? From now on he was determined to keep a much closer eye on his siblings. "Well first off, we need to get Melissa back here."
"Huh?" She really didn't want Melissa living here with her since she had her twin locked away in the attic. She didn't want Melissa to find her. It would mean she would have to lie some more, and right now she hadn't decided what she would say about her twin.
"We need to get Melissa back here, and I'll move in here to look after you two at least until the danger has passed."
"Danger! What danger!" She exclaimed.
"Jacy, one of those outlaws is still on the loose. He could come after you or Melissa again."
"What for?"
"Revenge!"
"I don't think so. Besides the Marshall is on his trail." As she said that she wondered what had happened to those other three men that she had sent to help the Marshall. She hoped that she wouldn't see them again. For if she did, she didn't know how she was going to handle it because obviously they thought that she was her twin. It seemed she was getting in deeper and deeper into the lies that she had spun. As long as they didn't backfire, she would be alright. Besides she was getting closer to Jimmy, now that he didn't remember Lee.
"I don't want to take any chances. I'm going to go get Melissa and--"
"NO!" Seeing his look of surprise, she continued, "She won't come here. She's upset with me." Thinking quickly she suggested, "Take her to your place. She will probably stay with you."
"Have you told her that I'm her brother?"
"Well, no. I haven't had the chance. And I didn't know when would be the right time to tell her. But now is a good as time as any. You tell her and let her move in with you. Then you can protect her in case that outlaw comes around."
"What about you?" Tally was worried for her as well.
"I'll be fine. I know how to use a gun. And if you're that worried about me, you can check on me every day. I'm sure I'll still be here, and besides I have to go into the newspaper office to print up the news every day."
"Well alright Jacy, but if I get wind that the outlaw is back in this vicinity, I'm bringing Melissa back here and I'll be staying, too."
"Alright it's a deal. If you need me to explain to Melissa about you then just let me know."
"I'll do that. Now I have to get back to town. I was staying on at the bordello until they got another bartender, but since I'm going to try and get Melissa to move into the ranch, I'm going to go ahead and quit."
She saw her brother to the door and waved to him as he rode off. Tally rode into town and tried to quit at the bordello, but a lot of people had just arrived in town from the train, and they had stopped in at the bordello. Dean needed him, so he stuck around. Tomorrow he would quit and tell Melissa that he was her brother.
The next day Tally saw Melissa talking to some man that he didn't know. He waited until they were done eating supper and Melissa was getting up from the table. The man stood up as she did and thanked her for having supper with him. Melissa smiled and started to leave but stopped when Tally walked up to her. "Good evening, Melissa. Can we talk?"
Melissa wondered what Tally wanted to talk to her for. Maybe Jacy had asked him to try and convince her to return the ranch. She hoped not because she wasn't ready to face Jacy yet. Melissa nodded her head. Tally put his arm around her shoulder and led her out the door.
They walked towards the livery, and Melissa couldn't believe her ears when he told her that he was her brother. Before saying anything she listened to his story about how he had been raised in the East and that he had never known that he had been taken from his real parents until his fake mom had passed away. Then he had found a letter that she had wrote telling about his abduction. He didn't mention his triplet for he hadn't been able to find her. The man he had investigating her disappearance had vanished as well.
When Melissa didn't respond to the news, Tally was afraid that she wasn't going to accept him as her brother. He would then have to go to Jacy for help. "I have the letter to prove it. Here you can read it if you like."
Melissa took the paper and read it. She then handed it back to him. Finally a smile spread across her face. "I've always wanted a brother." Tally smiled back and then grabbed his little sister in a big bear hug.
"Melissa, I sure would like it if you would come and live out at my ranch." Seeing her confused look he continued, "At least until that last outlaw is caught. Jacy told me all about what had happened. I'm angry with myself because I wasn't there to protect both of you. I wanted both of us to move in with Jacy, but she said that she didn't think that you would do that." Melissa shook her head as he said that.
"I -- we're not getting along right now." She explained.
"Ok, but I would feel better if you came and stayed at the ranch with me -- for a while. I'm going to be getting some show horses in soon. I sure could use an assistant to help me with them."
"REALLY?" She loved horses.
"Yes, really. So will you move out to my ranch?"
"Ok, I would like that. I'll get my things." Melissa started for the hotel then she turned around to look at Tally, "But what about the bordello?"
"I already quit working there. I have to concentrate on the ranch and the train." He replied. Melissa smiled and did a little skip to the hotel. Things seemed to be looking up for her. She had got a brother, a home and a job all in one day.
On the way out to the Joker's Wild Ranch, Melissa asked "How long has Jacy known that you were our brother?"
"She's known since the day I brought the train to town. She wanted to tell you, but like you said before, you two haven't been getting along. I hope you won't be mad at her because she didn't tell you right away."
Melissa shook her head. She knew that it was probably partly her fault that Jacy hadn't told her about Tally. She wondered if her and Jacy would ever be as close as they used to be. She wanted them to. Jacy had been right all along about Jake, and she hadn't listened. Now she wished she had.
