PRIMPING

FEBRUARY 10, 1860

Steven went into town and headed for the bank. He got there early enough, so that he was the first one in line when it opened. He was greeted at the window by Walter.

Walter said, "Hello Mr. Johnson. What can I do for you this beautiful morning?"

"Well, I would like to withdraw $30.00 from my account please, Mr. Simmons. I have a date for the dance. It has been so long since I have been out with a woman other then my late wife. So I want to do this right. Are you going to the dance?"

Walter shrugged, "Yes, Im going to help Jacy out with selling the items at the dance." Taking the money out of the box and handing it to Steven. "Here you go. I hope you have a good time."

Nodding Steven replied, "Thank you. I hope to see you there." Steven took the money and left the bank.

Steven headed home for lunch. After lunch Steven waved to Caly and Michael as he rode to town. Tying his horse to the post outside the dressmakers shop, he stood there for a few minutes. Taking a deep breath and shrugged his shoulders, he entered the shop. As he shut the door and looked around, Mrs. McGregor entered from the back room. Smiling, she said, "Hello Mr. Johnson. You are the second one from your place I have seen this week."

Looking confused he said as he thought Caly would never buy a dress. "Oh really. I didn't know that Michael had been into see you already."

Laughing Mrs. McGregor said, "No, I haven't seen Michael yet. It was Caly that was in here yesterday. She bought a lovely pink and peach dress with a matching hat. She is very excited about the dance. Whoever her date is hes very lucky. She is planing on being the perfect lady that night."

Smiling Steven replied, "Good for her." That boy sure can make her be a lady. "I need a suit for the dance."

"Right over here," she answered and led him to the rack where they were hanging.

Looking through the suits he found a nice brown suit. Turning to her he said, "This is the one."

She smiled, "That will look great on you. That will be $6.00."

Handing her the money he said, "Thank you. You have a good day Mrs. McGregor."

She nodded, "You too, Mr. Johnson."

He left the store and headed over to the barbershop. Mr. Sanders met him as he entered saying, "Hello, and what can I do for you today?"

"Well with the dance coming up I need to get a hair cut and shave." Steven said.

Nodding Luke said, "Please have a seat and we'll get you all done in time to get home for supper." Nodding Steven got into the chair and listened while Luke rattled on about his homeland. Then Luke said, "There you go, all done. That will be .40 cents, please."

Smiling as he looked in the mirror Steven said, "That looks great. Thank you, Mr. Sanders." He paid him and then headed home.
