JUNE 24, 1861
Grace smiled as
Charlie greeted her as she came into the restaurant. "Hi there. Care to join me for
lunch?"
Grace smiled at
him. "I was hoping to get your help with something."
"Sure,
what can I help you with?" Charlie asked pulling out a chair for her.
Sitting down
Grace thought about how to say this. Sighing she decided to just ask. "I want to help
get Buck and Caly back together. Neither of them is very happy right now."
Charlie took a
seat across from her. "What happened? They seemed so happy?"
"Well,
ummm . . . they got caught . . ." she thought trying to come up with the right word.
Then she smiled. "Mr. Johnson caught then doing you know."
Charlie smiled.
"Ohh dear. For you, sure I'll help. What do you want me to do?"
"Help them
see each other." She answered quietly.
"Okay,
I'll do what I can to help." He smiled at her.
Grace blushed
as she felt his gaze on her.
They had lunch.
He walked her back to boutique.
Steven watched
Charlie walk happily back to the restaurant. He was glad he was happy even if it wasn't
with his daughter.
After loading
the last of the supplies, Steven decided to go talk with Charlie. He wished Caly had
chosen Charlie instead of Buck.
Upon entering
he was greeted by a smiling Lilly. "Hello Lilly, how are you handling married
life?"
"Hello
Steven. OH, yes, it's so much more then I had ever thought. Will Caly be joining you
today?" She led him over to his table.
"No, she's
not talking to me right now." He shook his head. He just had to fix the rift between
them.
Patting his
shoulder, Lilly felt for him. She knew just how close him and Caly were. "I'm sorry
to hear that. She'll come around. How about our special today?"
Steven nodded.
"That will be fine. Thank you. I hope so." He sat down.
Lilly turned
and went to give the order to Charity. When she spotted Charlie, she leaned over and said,
"Charlie, think you can cheer up Steven? I haven't seen him this depressed
before."
Charlie looked
over at his friend. "I wonder where Caly is? She's usually with him when he comes to
town."
"She's not
talking to him."
"You're
kidding I hope? They're so close."
Shaking her
head. "I wish I was. He told me himself."
"I'll see
what I can do. Thanks Lilly. I think I have a way to help him."
Lilly nodded
and went to the kitchen.
Charlie went
over to Steven. "Hello Mr. Johnson."
Steven looked
up. "Oh hi, Charlie. Please call me Steven. Have a seat." Gesturing to the chair
across from him.
Charlie nodded
and sat down. "Alright Steven, Where's Caly? I have good news I want to share with
her."
"Wish I
knew. She hasn't stayed in the same room as me for more then a few minutes. She won't even
eat supper with me and Michael anymore."
Frowning
Charlie knew what had happened, but he needed to have Steven tell him. "What brought
this on? You two were so close."
Taking a sip of
his water, Steven sighed and decided to tell him what had happened. Maybe he could get
Caly to see that he was right. "I got home early from the cattle drive. I went to
leave a surprise for her in her room," pausing to block the image from his mind.
"I saw her and Buck. Let's just say if it hadn't been for her nightmares, I would be
holding a shotgun wedding right now."
Being a
well-educated man, Charlie knew what he meant. "Oh, I'm sorry. I think I might know
of something that might ease the stress at home."
Steven looked
up. "Anything! I feel bad about making her and Buck stop seeing each other. But I'm
not ready to let her go just yet."
"Well,
she's growing up, and she's a very pretty young lady. Buck's a good man. He really loves
her. But anyway, Clover left this morning, and I'm in need of another waitress. It might
help, and it will get her out of the house. What are you going to do about the Fourth of
July dance?"
Steven sighed.
"Trust her to abide by my rules. I can't lock her in her room as much as I want
to."
Charlie nodded.
He understood how hard this was on his friend.
Just then Lilly
brought over Steven's meal. "Enjoy." She placed it in front of him, and then she
went to take care of the other customers.
Taking a bite
Steven thought about it. "It might just work. All she does is mope around."
Charlie nodded.
"Alright, if she wants the job, it's hers. I wanted to talk to her anyway."
Extending his
hand to him, Charlie knew he really needed to talk to Caly now."
Steven shook
the offered hand and after Charlie walked away, he continued to eat.
Charlie went to
see if one of the girls would keep an eye on things for a short while. "Charity can
you watch things for a bit? I have a few things I have to take care of."
"Sure
Charlie."
Charlie nodded
and headed out of the restaurant.
