APRIL 25, 1861

Lee was thinking about how Buck and Caly, Grace and Charlie and Corey and Dean and all of her other friends were able to show their feelings toward the ones that they loved. She was getting sick, literally sick and tired of not being able to show her feelings toward Jimmy.

Jimmy saw that Lee was upset about something. He silently motioned for the only two other riders to leave them alone in the bunkhouse where Lee was sweeping. "Lee, what's wrong?" He asked gingerly.

Lee wiped the lonely tear that ran down her face and said, "Nothin'."

"Sweetheart, you know that you can talk to me."

"Jimmy, it's silly. I don't want to talk about it."

"If it's bothering you so bad that you sweep the same place on the floor for five minutes then it's not silly. Now please tell me what's wrong."

Lee sighed. "It's nothing really."

"I want to help, and I can't help if I don't know what is wrong."

"I'm just tired, ok. Tired of not being able to show how I feel about you in public and tired of not being able to wear dresses and tired of not being able to be myself! Hell, we can't even get married right now because I'm putting Lynn through school. All she wants is for me to be happy, but I promised to put her through school, and I can't do that with any other job. They won't pay me enough to make her tuition." Lee said finally unable to hold it all in.

Jimmy held her as she cried and let all her frustration out. He knew she was a strong woman, but he didn't realize that it was wearing on her like it was. "Its okay. Listen, Steven offered us all jobs the other day. Why don't you talk to him? Maybe he'll pay you what you send her. He knows you're a hard worker."

"Do you really think we could make it on that?"

"Yes, I think we can. It'll be tight for a while, but we'll be together. And I don't want you working at a job that you hate."

"I don't hate working for the express, I love the riding, and everyone here is like family to us. I'm just getting tired of not being able to be myself."

"If you want to work for someone that will let you be yourself, then that's what I want you to do. I just want you to be happy."

A few hours later, Lee was dressed in one of her riding dresses that she used to wear before her Express Days. She headed out to the Johnson's Ranch. When she got there, she didn't see anybody around. She went into the barn where she thought she heard somebody laughing. When she walked underneath the loft, a pair of bloomers hit her on the head. She laughed and shook her head. She knew what was going on up there. The loft was one of her and Jimmy's spots when it was raining. She couldn't resist letting them know that she was there. Besides she thought of Buck as a brother. She really didn't want to see him without clothes, and she did need to talk to Caly before talking with Steven.

"Umm . . . Caly, you lose something?" Lee said as she threw the bloomers back up to her.

"LEE? Oh, yeah, thanks." Caly said embarrassed.

"Yeah, it's just me. I hate to disturb you, but I really need to talk to you Caly."

"Okay we'll be right down." It took Caly and Buck a few minutes to redress. Caly was the first one down from the loft. When she saw that Lee was in a skirt, she was shocked.

When Buck saw that Lee was in a skirt, he asked, "Lee is everything alright?"

"Yeah, no, I need to talk to Caly."

"What's wrong, Lee?"

"Did someone tell the company that you're a girl?"

"No, Buck that's it. I'm just tired of not being able to show who I really am. Caly, do you think that your father would hire a girl? I still have to support Lynn."

"I think he will. He knows how hard you work from the job switch."

"OK"

"You really going to quit the Express?" Buck asked.

Lee nodded, "I have to do something. Buck I'm going crazy. I can't be myself in public, and it's making me go insane. Besides, if Steven hires me, then Jimmy and I can set a date for the wedding."

"Oh, Lee, that's great!" Caly exclaimed.

"Yeah it is, but at the same time, I'm not real sure I'm ready to quit riding. I love riding and the boys are all are like family. I'll miss them if Teaspoon won't let me stay with Rachel. I haven't talked with anybody but Jimmy and you guys."

"What did Jimmy say?" Buck asked.

"He said he just wants me to be happy."

"We have a small cabin you can use."

Lee smiled, "Thanks, but hopefully I'll be able to stay with the family.

I won't know until after I talk to Teaspoon." After a short pause, Lee asked, "Caly, will come with me to talk to your father? I didn't realize how nervous I would be."

"Sure I will." Caly smiled.

The girls walked toward the house and left Buck feeling frustrated. He would have to wait until after Lee and Caly talked with Steven to have time alone with Caly again.

As they walked to the house, Lee said again, "I'm really sorry about interrupting you and Buck. I know how hard it is to get time alone sometimes."

Caly smiled. "It's okay."

Lee reaches up and grabs a straw out of the back of Caly's hair as they get to the door.

Caly nods, "Thanks"

"Thank you for coming with me." Lee smiled back.

"You're welcome."

When Caly and Lee entered Steven's office, he looked up from paperwork and said, "Hey, um . . . Lynn isn't it? You're Lee's sister right?"

Caly and Lee looked at each other. Lee hadn't even thought that Steven would mistake her for her twin. "Umm, Lynnette is still in Denver. I am Lee. LeAnn is my full name."

"Oh Sorry, Lee, can I do something for you?"

Lee nervously bit her bottom lip, "Well the other day, when we found out about Tally owning the new Train and all, you offered us all jobs. Does that offer still stand?"

"Yes, it does"

"I'm still putting Lynn through nursin' school, and Jimmy and I want to get married, but if the company finds out I'm a girl then I'm fired. So I thought that if I quit and come to work for you, then it wouldn't be a big deal, and I could be myself in public. But I still need to talk to Teaspoon to see how much notice he needs and whether or not I need to move. After all the bunkhouse is for the riders, but hopefully I can stay with Rachel." Lee said nervously.

Steven chuckled. "Well, I could use some more help around here. You give Teaspoon as much notice as he needs, and then the day after your last day at the Express, you report here for work."

Lee smiled. She couldn't believe her good luck. "Yes sir."

When Lee turned to smile at Caly she saw that Caly was not there. "I bet she's back up in that loft with Buck." Lee thought. "Well, I'd better go tell Jimmy and the others that I'll be quitting the Express."
