JUNE 22, 1860
Caller Bob watched as all the people filed into his barn. He was amazed to see so many folks attending the square dance lessons. Just a few weeks ago Jacy had told him that they barely had enough for two squares. But as he counted everybody standing around, they had at least enough for four squares right now.
Jacy checked off everyones name as they came through the door. She was glad to see everybody attending. She had been afraid that some wouldnt show up. She glanced around looking for Cody. There was no way she could have missed him coming in, but frantically her eyes searched the barn as she hoped she had missed him. Just when she was about ready to give up on him and tell Caller Bob that everyone was here, Cody walked through the door. Jacys face was all grins as she saw him enter.
As Cody entered he saw his girl and a big grin materialized. He stepped over to her and said, "Good evening, lovely lady."
"I was about to think that you werent coming." Jacy said.
"The only way Id missed being here is if I had a mail run that I couldnt get out of." He winked at Jacy.
"Let me tell Caller Bob that everybody is here. Ill be right back." Jacy walked over to speak with Caller Bob, and Cody spotting Ike went over to talk to him.
"So youre teaching my girl sign, huh?" Cody asked as he joined Ike. Ike nodded. "Well, as long as thats all you do with her."
Ike signed I wouldnt take your girl, Cody. Besides she likes you.
Jacy joined them as Ike was signing. "Whats he sayin?"
"He was just telling me that you like me very much." Cody replied.
Jacy blushed with a grin on her face. Changing the subject she asked, "Are you two ready to learn to square dance?"
"Always when such a lovely lady as yourself is my partner." Cody responded.
Caller Bob said, "Alright." He stopped and began again only much louder, "Alright now everybody please quiet down, so that we can begin."
As Cody was beginning to say something to Jacy, she put a finger up to her mouth and said, "Shhhhh!" Finally, everybody stopped talking and listened to Caller Bob.
"Would all the volunteers please step over to the right side of the barn, and all the students take a position on the left side of the barn, please. This way we can get the volunteers partnered up with the students. Those that already know how to square dance will be know as Angels. Your angels will help you learn to square dance." Everybody did as Caller Bob asked.
Charity had came to learn to square dance, but as she saw the person she wanted to be teamed with moving to her side of the barn, she knew if she stayed on that side, too, then they wouldnt be partners for sure. Deciding quickly she made her move to the other side of the room.
Elena watching Luke move to the left side of the barn decided how hard could it be to fake knowing how to square dance. It couldnt be that tough. Besides she was a quick learner at most things, especially moves, and Caller Bob was going to be instructing them. So without any further thought Elena moved to the right side of the barn. She was determined to be Lukes partner. Besides Meghan couldnt be his partner since she was a student, too.
"Now well start with these four volunteers. Please go over and pick a partner and form a square." Caller Bob instructed.
Elena and Charity were thrilled because they were both in the first group of volunteers, and of course they picked the guys that they wanted to. Melissa and Corey were also in the first group, so Melissa chose Michael, and Corey picked Buck.
Finally, it came to Jacys turn to choose a student. Unfortunately, Cody had already been picked, and out of the other students she only knew one fella better than the others, so she chose Jimmy. She knew CJ and Tally a little, but she didn't know Tally enough to decide whether she really liked him or not, and as for CJ, well, he was a little too overbearing at times.
Melissa was thrilled that Jacy and Jimmy were partners. She just knew in her heart that they were meant for each other.
"Now that everybody is paired up, we will begin." Caller Bob said as he looked around that barn. "First off a square is formed by four couples. You should all have eight people in your group." He knew that they all did. "With the back of each couple parallel to a different wall. The lady should be on the right side of the gentleman." Caller Bob paused as the Angels helped the students get into the right position. "Starting with the couple who has their backs to me you are number One, and then going around the square to the right there is couple Two, Three and Four. Head Couples are One and Three, and Side Couples are Two and Four."
After everyone seemed to digest that information, Caller Bob continued, "Now everybody bow to your partner." He watched as they did as he told them to do. "That will always be the first call. And sometimes a caller will also ask you to bow to your corner. Your corner is the person on the girls left or the boys right.
"Our second call will usually, but not always, be circle left or circle right. And when a caller doesnt specify in which direction to circle, it will always be left. So now circle left." He called circle left and circle right a few times and threw just the word circle in to see if he could throw some of them off in which he did with the students. And it seemed like several times the students and Angels were playing tug of war when several wanted to go one way and the others wanted to go the opposite way.
"Ok, now stop back where you started. This position is known as your Home. So when I tell you to get back home, you will automatically go back to where you were first standing when we began square dancing. Now we are going to learn the Dosado. Everybody face your partner, now pass right shoulders without turning, move to the right passing in back of your partner, then moving backwards pass left shoulders returning to your original starting position." Caller Bob had them do that move a few times and then he described their next lesson. "Now we will learn the Allemande Left. Face your corner, join left forearms, walk forward around each other, turn three quarters, and then you end up facing your partner."
After practicing that move with the Angels giving the students instructions, Caller Bob continued, "Now usually but not always the next call after an Allemande Left is the Right and Left Grand. So everybody do an Allemande Left, and then every lady give your right hand to the gentlemans right hand." The students, thinking he meant the gentleman that they just did an Allemande Left with, turned around to give their corner their right hand.
Noticing the misunderstanding Caller Bob said, "No! Lets try this again. Everybody get back home." Everybody did that. "Now Allemande Left, and every lady give your right hand to the gentlemans, which is your partner, right hand, and then your partner is going to pull you on by him. And then the young ladies will give their left hand to the next gentlemans left hand, and then you give your right hand to the next, and a left hand to the next until you meet your partner. Now this is where another call comes in that we need to learn, and this will be the last lesson for the evening."
Now they were all standing face to face as they had met their partner after doing the Right and Left Grand. "Now when the ladies meet their partner, you ladies anticipate your partner and make an independent right face turn and join him in a Promenade position. This is where you put your right hand in his and down a little lower you put your left hand in his left hand, and then you walk, Promenade, around until you hear the next call. Which for now will be Promenade home. Now everybody do that." After all the couples arrived back home, Caller Bob said, "Now lets take a break and then we will come back and practice these calls some more.
