SEPTEMBER 4, 1860
Daniel heard the front door slam followed by the sound of his daughter’s voice and smiled. He came out of his study just as Meg was coming in, and he barely prevented the two of them colliding into each other by grabbing her and swinging her into his arms.
"Hi Daddy." Meg said as she hugged him.
"Hey there Princess. What brings you here today?"
Meg smiled broadly. "I’m feeling fine so don’t worry. I’m here to see Serena. I have an appointment with her."
Daniel frowned. "Meghan, Serena is at the boarding house she was switched with Destiny remember?"
"Sure I remember. Can I wait for her in your study? I need to look up some things in your books for school and I might as well do that to pass the time."
His eyebrows rose. "Meg, Serena isn’t coming home anytime soon. Are you sure you had an appointment with her? I can check you if you’d like."
Meghan grinned and kissed her father’s cheek. "I think that having you as my doctor right now is a bad idea. You are too closely involved with me and would surely have me confined to my bed. Serena is a much better choice and she should be here any minute now."
"Was she leaving the boarding house early then?"
"Early and permanently." Meg hugged her father tightly. "Luke is at Caller Bob’s as we speak paying to get her back. Thank you for bringing him home to me Daddy."
Daniel clutched his daughter to him. "You’re welcome baby. Is everything okay between the two of you?"
"Perfectly wonderful."
He kissed the top of her head. "That’s all I care about." The sound of he door opening had the pair pulling away from each other and poking their heads out the doorway.
Serena came down the hallway and stopped in her tracks when she saw the two disembodied heads peeking out from Daniel’s study.
"Now there is a sight I haven’t seen in a long time. It brings back wonderful memories."
"So I hear you’re home for good, is it true?"
Serena smiled broadly. "It is, thanks to your daughter and son-in-law."
Meg approached her stepmother and kissed her cheek. "It’s the least we could do." She pressed a hand to Serena’s slightly rounded abdomen. "You look radiant Serena."
"Thank you Sweetheart. And you? How are you feeling?"
"Fine, thank goodness, and Luke is so attentive he’s keeping me well fed, and he puts up with my mood swings. I’m sure I’ll make his life incredibly unbearable before the baby is born, but for now he’s taking it all in stride."
Serena laughed and glanced over at Daniel. "I’m afraid I’m doing the same to your father."
"Well, the men in our lives will just have to deal with it. For now there’s nothing to be done." Meghan said with a sly smile.
Serena laughed and kissed Daniel. "And how is my husband this fine day?"
"Better now that you’re home."
Meghan blushed at the display of affection and cleared her throat. "Well, I better be going."
"What about your appointment with Serena?" Daniel asked.
"I’m sure you two have much better things to do. Can I reschedule for tomorrow Serena?"
"Don’t you have to work?"
"Well . . . yes but I can come in during lunch."
"No, I want you eating full meals and not grabbing something quickly because you have to come here." Daniel replied.
"I agree."
Meghan rolled her eyes. "Fine, I was just thinking about you two. I know if you’re anything like me and Luke, you’d want to be alone right now."
"I didn’t need to here that." Daniel groaned.
Serena laughed and took Meg’s hand. "Come on Meghan, let’s not give your father indigestion so early in the day."
Later that night as Serena lay in her husband’s arms she sighed contentedly. "What are you thinking?" Daniel asked softly.
"How incredibly lucky we are." She replied.
He smiled and kissed the top of her head. "We are that."
"Daniel?"
"Yes?"
"Are you still scared of my pregnancy?"
Daniel waited a moment before he answered. "Yes. I’m terrified for both you and Meghan. As a doctor I know better than most expectant fathers what kind of complications can happen. I look at both you and Meg, and I see how small you both are, and I’m frightened of losing you."
Serena hugged him tightly to her and kissed his chest. "You have to have faith Daniel. You’re a good doctor, and I trust that you’ll know what to do when the time comes. Besides you said yourself I’m in perfect health and everything is going as it should."
Daniel sighed. "What about Meg?"
Serena smiled. "She’s doing wonderfully. She’s eating well and much to her displeasure she’s gaining weight."
Daniel nodded. "And the pain she had?"
"Hasn’t happened again. I think it was indigestion, and she wasn’t prepared for it. Then again she hasn’t had an argument with Luke since then and she seems to have less worries, so I can’t be sure."
Daniel exhaled loudly. "I warned Luke about keeping her worry free."
Serena giggled. "And everyone knows when you speak they better listen."
"A lot of good that did, no one seemed to listen when Meghan wanted to get married."
She slapped his arm playfully. "Get over it Daniel it’s done."
He laughed and kissed her tenderly. "Has it occurred to you that you’re going to be a grandmother?"
Serena paled. "Oh my Lord, I never even thought about that."
He squeezed her to him and kissed the top of her head. "A lovelier grandmother I’ve never seen."
"Don’t call me that."
"What Grandma?"
"Stop it." She said.
Daniel chuckled. "Grandma, grandma, graaaaaandma."
Serena laughed and tickled her husband. "Oh yeah old man, you’re going to be both father to a newborn and grandfather to one. I ask how you’re going to keep up? At least I have youth on my side."
Daniel gasped at his wife and clutched his chest in mock distress. "You wound me. I’ll have you know I can keep up with you young ’uns."
"Oh yeah?" She teased. "Prove it."
Daniel wiggled his eyebrows at his wife and proceeded to prove it.
