MARCH 22, 1861

Serena smiled as she entered the small nursery to find her husband had beat her inside. Daniel was now completely immersed in changing his son's diaper and Serena was grateful for it. The man tenderly fastened the small diaper, lifted his son gingerly in his arms and cooed softly to the infant. As he rocked him gently he turned and found his wife in the doorway.

"Man talk." Daniel said with a wide grin.

"Of course, that's exactly what it sounded like to me," She replied as she entered. She placed a quick kiss to the older Daniel's cheek before leaning down and placing one on the baby's downy head.

Daniel placed his son in his cradle and the two parents looked down with pride. "I still can't believe he's ours." Daniel said reverently.

"Neither can I." Serena replied. "I suppose we can expect to deliver another child in the not too distant future."

"Javier and Lilly?" Daniel asked as he led his wife out of the nursery and down into his study.

"Yep."

"Well, I just hope they take advantage of the time they have together first. There's no need to rush into having children." Daniel said softly. He didn't say that he wished his daughter had taken advantage of her status as a newlywed before starting her family.

"I suppose. They're still young. They have plenty of time."

Daniel nodded quickly. "Exactly. Have we decided what to get them as a wedding gift?"

Serena turned to him with an uncertain look in her eyes. "Do you think we'd be able to bring DJ with us to the wedding?"

"Oh that reminds me, Meg said she'd baby-sit."

"Isn't she going?"

"Who would take care of Liz and Grant?" Daniel asked.

Serena frowned. "Good question." She briefly wondered if Luke would be staying behind with his wife or would he attend to represent his family. She was sure Meg would send him to the ceremony and reception, even if it were only for a little while. "Well I suppose if Meghan takes care of DJ then we should go."

"Fine. What do you think we should get the happy couple?"

Serena bit her lip as she thought for a few minutes. "I always liked the china set we received when we were married. I guess we could get them their very first set of formal dinner dishes."

"Great! I leave it to you to pick it out." Daniel said happily. "Why don't you take Meghan with you. I think that maybe something is wrong between her and Luke. Why don't you find out what it is." Serena stiffened and Daniel noticed her uneasiness. Now was the time to strike. He didn't like secrets being kept from him. "Unless of course you already know."

Serena smiled weakly. "Why would you think that?"

"Because of all the quiet conversations you and Luke have been having. What's going on Serena?"

"Nothing Daniel."

The man sat back in his chair and sighed loudly. It seemed his wife was going to keep it a secret. "I know Serena." He stated flatly.

Her brows rose a fraction before she schooled her features to be more relaxed. "Know what?"

"Meghan told me about her situation. She told me about the kisses and about her confrontation with Luke and the decision he's asked her to make. I know everything Serena."

She exhaled in relief. "You have to understand I only kept this from you because I didn't want you to worry about your daughter. I know how you felt about her getting married so young and so soon after they began courting."

Daniel nodded. "I'm not angry at you keeping secrets from me. You were protecting Luke and Meg and I appreciate that. However I am only going to say this once and I expect you to obey me."

"What's that?" She asked warily.

"You leave Meg and Luke to handle their marital problems themselves. From here on in we stay out of it."

"Daniel-"

"No Serena. From now on we let Meg and Luke handle their own problems. They need to make their decisions without being pushed by our opinions. Understood?"

Though she hated to agree, Serena knew her husband was right. "Yes I agree, Daniel."
