INTRODUCING KATHLEEN!

Kathleen just came to town from Lafayette, Louisiana where she grew up in an orphanage. She learned early on that she was very good with younger children, and when she heard of a little town out west needing a school teacher, she applied for the job and got it. She lives in the house provided for the school teacher.

One day while Kathleen was fixing up some things in the schoolhouse, she heard a noise coming from the front door. She walked to it and before she could open someone else did. Kathleen was a little scared and she dropped the books that she had in her hands, hearing the noise Catherine looked surprised at Kathleen.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know you were here, and I didn't mean to scare you," Catherine said.

"Oh, no I'm fine," Kathleen started to pick up the books from the floor.

"Let me help you with this," Catherine helped Kathleen take the books back to the table and she continued, "I was riding near and I thought I might take a look." Catherine felt happy to be in the school. She looked around at the desks, chair and the blackboard.

"How long has it been since you finished school?" Kathleen asked realizing that Catherine was a little fascinated with the place.

"I never went to school." Catherine answered. Kathleen looked surprised at the hotel owner.

"Why? If you don't mind me asking."

Catherine hesitated for a few seconds. She didn't know if she should talk about herself to Kathleen but for some strange reason she thought that she could trust the teacher. "We never stayed in a place for to long, I mean my father and me. We were always travelling and I never could go. But my father told me everything I should know."

"Oh! I'm sorry for that. The school time is one of the best times for a child, but I think he did a good job".

"Thanks Kathleen, it is Kathleen, isn't it? I'm Catherine."

"Yes it is. Nice to meet you, Catherine." Kathleen said smiling. Catherine nodded and smiled back.

The two women stayed inside the school for a couple of more hours talking about their lives before Dreamville and sharing their experiences. Kathleen talked a little about the time she was with the nuns and Catherine about her father and Bird. They felt that they could trust each other and that now they each had another person they could count on.

Catherine is Kathleen’s first friend in Dreamville. Kathleen hasn't met the riders yet. That happens at the first dance that is held since the Express started. She is more concerned with the children than with her love life, but if the right man came along wanting to court her, she would not turn him down. After meeting the riders she will see the riders as "good" boys who could be good friends. When she finds out that some of the riders cannot read or write, she offers to teach them. She goes out to the waystation for this. Lessons will be held at night after supper and on weekends. She already knows sign language because she had a student in Lafayette that was deaf. She wanted to help this child, so she took the initiative to learn how to communicate with this child when others said he was unteachable.
