SEPTEMBER 21, 1860

Samantha was bored and it was Thursday evening. She decided to ride out to Caller Bob's farm and watch the square dancing lessons. Upon arrival she tied Visions to the corral post. She went to the big barn doorway and peeked around the corner. She couldn't get up the nerve to enter, so she watched from outside.

First off she watched Melissa's square. Melissa was very good and only messed up when someone else did, and she couldn't get them to do what she wanted them to do. Charity seemed bored and like she didn't really care if she messed up or not. Elena didn't care if anybody messed up or not. If someone messed up that meant that she could jump back into Luke's hands and promenade around the square, though she would rather jump into his arms. She kept trying her best to end up with Luke, even though she was suppose to have a new partner as they moved around the square. Luke was trying his best not to get upset with Elena, but Samantha could see it in how upset he was by the flickers now and then in his facial expressions. The others in the square seemed to be taking it all in stride and trying their best to do the right calls.

Samantha stopped watching Melissa's square for a little while to watch the other squares. Sometimes the other squares would mess up, but not as often as Melissa's. And when they did mess up they usually formed lines and waited until they could get back into the swing of things again. After watching the other squares for a little bit she decided that it was much funnier watching Melissa's square, so her eyes kept straying back to their side of the barn.

The song ended, and Samantha watched the squares thank each other and then disperse to go one way or another, some to the refreshments and some to talk to friends.

Tally was having fun helping Meghan learn the new calls, but he was being very cautious with her though for he knew that she was pregnant. Even though their square broke down a few times, they all were having fun. As he was promenading Meghan home he happened to look towards the door and see someone peering in. After the song ended and he told everybody in his square thank you, he headed for the door to see who was spying on them.

Samantha saw Tally heading her way. She knew him because he had kept his horse stabled at the livery before buying a home of his own. She backed away from the barn and went to her horse, but stopped before mounting when she heard someone shout at her. "Hold up there!" Tally called out to Samantha. Samantha wheeled around.

"Good evening, Tally." Samantha watched as Tally came closer.

"So are you here for lessons?" Tally asked.

"I don't think so." Samantha replied.

"Why not? Don't you like dancing?" Tally inquired.

"Your class is full. You don't need anybody else." Samantha replied without actually answering his question.

"You're right we don't, but maybe I know a few people that wouldn't be missed if they left and you took their place." Tally had come to like Samantha, and he would like to get to know her more. He had never been fascinated by Indians before, but Samantha was beautiful and different than most Indians. Of course she was part white, too, so that might account for it.

"Are you suggesting wiping out a few ladies in there?" Samantha was somewhat sure that he was kidding but then again he might be serious. She didn't know Tally very well.

"For you, sure." Tally grimaced at Samantha's doubtful expression. She probably couldn't tell if he was kidding or not. He smiled at her to show that he was just kidding.

"You're teasing me." Samantha grimaced.

"We're halfway into the class. Maybe when this class is over, you'll take classes." Tally would like to spend more time with Samantha, but he was kind of shy when it came to relationships with women. He wasn't sure of how to approach the subject, and every time he thought of a way to see or do something with her after a few minutes he would reject the idea.

Cutting into Tally's thoughts, Samantha replied, "I might. Well, I hear the music starting up again. You better get back inside."

Tally nodded and then slowly headed toward the barn, but he kept glancing back to see Samantha. Before entering he waved to her, and Samantha waved back. Then she mounted Visions and rode out, but she did glance back to see if she could get another glimpse of Tally, but, unfortunately, he was gone.
