MAY 23, 1861
Charlie watched Tally play with his food, knowing that he was sweet on the girl that
ran the livery. He hated to see him this depressed. Nodding his head he made his decision.
"Lilly, come here please." Charlie called.
Wondering what was wrong, Lilly walked over. "Yes, Charlie?"
"Think you can get the girl from the livery here at seven tonight? Sorry, I can't
remember her name."
"Samantha. Sure, I think she'll come. Why?"
"Well, I was going to try and get her and Tally back together. Just look how
miserable he is."
Lilly smiled. "She'll be here, don't worry."
Charlie smiled and walked over to Tally. "You want to win your gal's heart
back?"
Tally looked up at Charlie. "I would love to. But I can't figure out how to do
that."
"Well, I have a way that might work. Just be here at seven tonight."
Tally wasnt sure but he was willing to try anything. "Alright, I'll be
here."
Lilly went over to the livery. "Samantha?"
Samantha turned at hearing her name called. "Oh! Hi, Lilly. Can I help you?"
"Well, can you meet me at the restaurant at seven tonight?"
"Sure, may I ask why?"
"It's a surprise. Please be there."
Samantha smiled at her friend. "Sure, I'll be there."
"Thanks Sam." Lilly said as she hugged her.
Samantha smiled and hugged back. Then she watched as her friend headed back over to the
restaurant.

Samantha arrived at the restaurant on time.
Charlie showed her to the table with lighted candles on it. "Your surprise will be
here soon."
Samantha wondered what was going on.
Just then Tally came through the door. "I'm sorry, Sam. Please give me another
chance."
Samantha thought about it. "I don't know. I don't like being lied to."
"I wont lie to you again. I promise."
Samantha pondered the request for a few minutes while she watched Tally squirm. She had
been thinking all week about what Tally had done, and she had concluded that if she had
been in his shoes that she 'might have' done the same thing. Finally, she said,
"Alright, but if you keep something from me again or lie to me --."
"OH, I wont. I promise." Tally said before she finished. Samantha smiled at him.
He smiled back at her as he took the seat opposite her. They talked a while, and then ate
a good supper. Tally walked Samantha back to the livery. He thought it was too soon to
kiss her, so he bowed his head and wished her a goodnight.
