MAY 2, 1861

Samantha leaned up against the stall and began to think about Tally or Jedidiah. She wasn’t sure which name she liked better. A few weeks ago, Samantha couldn't believe her eyes when Tally had told everybody that he was the railroad owner. Why hadn't he told her? The more she thought about it the madder she had got that day, so finally, after she saw him speaking with lots of people, she had headed for the livery. She passed Tally on the way.

Tally had smiled at her when she had came near him, and she could see the look of confusion on his face when she didn't stop, but she didn’t care. She was hurting something awful, and when he had called out, she hadn’t turned back or even answered him. As she reached the livery, she had turned back just once, and she had noticed that he had been drawn into a conversation with Jacy. This made her more angry for he hadn’t even tried to follow her. She stomped her foot and withdrew into the livery.

Unbeknownst to Samantha, Tally had decided to follow her that day, but had got waylaid by Jacy. After getting rid of her, he was also stopped several more times from people who wanted to know more about his ownership of the railroad, but finally he got them interested in dancing instead of him, so that he could once again look for Samantha. He had hoped that she had returned, but unfortunately, she hadn’t. So he had headed for the livery.

As Tally had opened the door, he had heard her talking to herself. He saw that she was leaning against her horse, but didn’t make any move to interrupt her.

"Why didn't he tell me. I thought he was being honest with me. I wonder what else he’s lied about?" Samantha stated as she stroked her horse.

Tally had felt ashamed. He had stood there trying to figure out what to do. He really did like her. He knew he had to make things right somehow, but he just didn’t know how. She’s right. I should have been honest with her. He had been very upset, so he had left hoping that something would present itself to him in order to win Samantha’s trust again.

Samantha was brought back to the here and now from the nicker of Reflections as Ted brought him into the livery. Samantha decided not to spend any more time thinking about that fake Tally as she grabbed Reflection’s reins and started tending to him.

Ted watched as Samantha started taking off the Reflections saddle. He knew something was bothering her, but he wasn’t sure what. For the last couple of weeks, she just hadn’t been herself. He didn’t think it was his place to pry, so he left.
