INTRODUCING CALY AND MICHAEL! |
|
The morning was chilly but the sun was shinning which promised of a warm day. Several weeks ago Caly had returned from school after being expelled again for fighting. This was the fifth school she had been expelled from for the same reason. After he saw Caly off on her rounds to check the cattle, Michael went to do his chores. The whole time he wished he was checking the cattle instead of his sister. He thought that she got away with too much like spending a lot of her time at the Pony Express Station. He thought she needed some girlfriends instead of being friends with all the boys over there. As Caly was riding Starbright through the lower pasture, she checked part of her fathers herd. She thought to herself, this is where I belong, not back east. After checking on the herd she headed for the higher pasture. She loved the Ranch, the land, and the towns people. She didn't have many friends except for the riders of the pony express. She was one of the first people to greet them when they came to town 2 months ago. Her and Buck fast became good friends. Both knowing that the other one would listen when they needed to talk. They shared their joys and fears. Smiling as she rode to the pasture. She remembered the day she first met Buck. She was sitting under a tree crying because she missed her mother. Buck was returning from a run when he came upon her. He stopped to make sure she wasn't hurt and to see if she needed a ride into town. Being the gentle soul that he is, he sat down and listened to her. He told her he knew how she felt because he too had lost his mother around the same age. They were good friends from then on. Riding into the higher pasture she saw someone waving at her. Feeling uneasy she pulled her rifle from the saddle holder and rode closer. As she rode within a few feet she saw that it was Buck. He often came by to help out with the cattle and repairs. He would even talk the other riders into coming out to help from time to time. Reholstering her rifle she kicked Starbright into a run. Buck saw that she recognized him. He smiled as he watched her ride toward him. Her hair was blowing out behind her. It was one of the few times he had seen her without her hair in a braid down her back. As he watched her, he too remembered the day they had met. How she was the first one to greet them when they came and to accept him for who he was. As she pulled Starbright to a stop in front of him, he grabbed the halter and held the horse. Dismounting in a very unladylike fashion, Buck shook his head saying, "Caly, you know how your father feels about you doing that." He caught her as she lost her balance. Smiling and laughing she said, "I think he has giving up on trying to make a lady out of me. I guess he thinks a beau would make that happen faster. Now I know what youre thinking and I don't want to hear a lecture from you. You of all people know that I can be a lady when I want to. So what brings you out here today?" He nodded in agreement. He said, "I was on my way back from a run when I thought I would stop by and check and see if everything was okay here." They walked with their horses following behind them. When she tripped and fell into him. Burying her face in his chest out of embarrassment, she said something he couldn't hear. Leaning down he said, "Please say that again. I didn't hear you." Lifting her head a little saying, "Im sorry. I shouldn't have tripped like that." Lifting her chin Buck said, "Don't be embarrassed. What are friends for? Besides, why would I let my good friend fall and get hurt." She Smiled at him because she knew he was right. After feeding the chickens and milking the cows, Michael was feeling lonely, so he decided to join Caly. While he mounted Stormy, he said aloud, "Now where do I look? He had never done this before. Not knowing where to look. He headed out for the far pasture and as luck would have it he found Caly there. Michael saw Caly and Buck standing around talking. As he rode towards them he thought, Caly what a coward you are for not telling him how you feel. Just as he got a few feet closer Sarah looked up and saw him riding toward them. When he reached them he frowned and said, "Hi sis! I finished my chores and thought you could use some help, but I see you already have some." Then he wheeled his horse around and went home before Caly or Buck could even say hello to him. Michael was jealous of Buck because lately he seemed to be spending a lot of time with Caly and that left Michael to be alone more. He missed hanging out with his sister. |

INTRODUCING STEVEN! |
|
| Despite the chilly weather
Steven was out behind the barn chopping wood. When he heard the sound of a horse come
thundering in to the yard. With his arms full of wood he walked around the side of the
yard just in time to see Michael take his horse into the barn. After putting the wood onto the woodpile, he went in to the barn to see what had Michael so mad. He found him in Stormys stall brushing him. As he watched him he said, "Mikey, what has you so mad? Take it easy on the horse its not his fault is it?" Turning to him Michael said, "NO! Its not Stormys fault. When I finished my chores I went to see if Caly needed any help checking the herd. But when I found her, she was with Buck again. So I got mad and left." As Michael started out of the stall, Steven grabbed his arm and said, "So why are you so mad about that? Your sister is growing up. Its natural that she would want to spend time around nice young men like Buck." Looking disgusted at his father, Michael said, "It use to be just me and Caly. But now it seems that she doesn't have time for me anymore. She would prefer to spend all her free time over at the express station with those boys." Placing an arm around Michaels shoulders and heading him toward the house, Steven said, "Now, I know that she makes time for you. She has always been there when you needed her. I know that you wish she would have more girlfriends but its just not that way. She gets along better with the young men in town because she spent so much time with you when you were little. But someday real soon you are going to start to notice the young women in town and want to spend time with them and getting to know them. And you know that the more time Caly spends with the young men maybe one day she will have a beau that will help her become more lady like." Just then Caly and Buck came riding into the yard. Upon seeing them ride in together Micheal said, "See what I mean father." Then he went inside to clean up for lunch. Pulling their horses to a stop, Caly said, "Hello father." Caly started to dismount when Buck made a small noise. She turned to look at him. He shook his head, and Caly nodded and waited for him to dismount. Then he came over and helped her down in a lady like fashion. Then turning to her father he said, "Hello Mr, Johnson. It sure is a beautiful day isn't it?" He reached his hand out to her father. Steven shook his hand and said, "Thank you for reminding her to be a lady. Good day to you too. Yes its a beautiful day. Caly's face turned red from embarssment. Buck smiled and said, "Thank you. I'll put up your horse for you." Buck took the reins from her and Caly said, "If its okay father, I invited Buck to stay for lunch. I hope thats okay." Steven nodded yes and said, "Thats fine. Buck put your horse in the corral and well have lunch." Buck waked the horses over to the corral. As Caly and her father walked into the house to prepare lunch. On the way in Steven said, "Caly, honey, your brother is mad at you for not spending as much time with him as you used to." Caly turned to her fatehr and said, "Okay, I will talk to him tonight after supper. I still spend time with him. I just like to spend time with my friends, too. But I promise I will talk to him tonight." A few minutes later Buck walked in. Caly handed him a cup of coffee and then they all sat down for lunch. After they finished eating, everyone walked out to the corral to see Buck off. As he mounted up Buck said, "Thank you for lunch. I will see you in town later, Caly. Mike, why dont you come with Caly? Im sure she wont mind. It was good seeing you today Mr. Johnson. Please let me know if you need any help. I will be willing to come help out." Caly looked at Michael and when he didn't answer she said, "Yes, I'll see you in town later. Ill bring Mikey with me. Who knows maybe we can find a pretty girl for him to talk to." She smiled and then waved to Buck as he rode off toward the station. |
