APRIL 5, 1860
Richard went to the hotel looking for Eliza. Upon reaching the front desk he asked, "Catherine is Eliza still here? I haven't seen her around town."
"No Richard. She checked out a few days ago. She said she was going to stop by and see you before she left. town." Catherine answered.
Looking confused Richard said, "No she never came to talk to me. The last time I saw her was the day I helped her get a room here. I wondered why she never stopped by to see me. Anyway, thanks Catherine. I am sorry to have bothered you."
Catherine nodded saying, "Its no bother. I am sorry I couldn't be of more help. I am sure she had her reasons for leaving."
Nodding Richard said, "Youre right. Thanks." He turned and left the hotel. As he left the hotel he noticed Walter and Ted coming form the bank. Walking over to them he said, "Hello, Mr. Simmons and Mr. Brown. Have either of you by any chance seen Eliza around town?" They looked at each other. Then Walter said, "No, Mr. McDonald I haven't see her."
"I saw her leave town on the stagecoach. I think she was heading East." Ted replied.
Nodding Richard said, "Thank you gentlemen. They nodded and continued on their way home.
He didn't know what to think, so he went to the saloon and poured himself a drink. He didnt drink often, but this seemed like a good time to have one. After a few drinks he decided to call it a night.
On the walk home he thought, why Eliza. Oh well, he figured he would never know because he would never see her again. He headed for the boarding house.
