NOVEMBER 6, 1861
Richard looked up at hearing the covers move
on the smaller bed. He couldn't hide the smile that crossed his face as the boy walked
over rubbing his eyes. Morning son.
Morning. Hal looked up. Are
we going to live and eat here at the hotel all the time?
Richard smiled. No son. I'm going to
build us a place of our own onto the back of the saloon. I was hoping you would like to
help.
Can I really? Hal wasn't sure he
was hearing right. Can I have my own room too?
The blonde nodded. Sure can, but first
we have to meet with the judge. About you staying with me and being my son. That is if you
want to?
Hal nodded. Oh yes I do. I want you to
be my pa.
They both cleaned up and headed over to the saloon. As they waited Richard tried to keep his thoughts positive.
Just then Judge Wereton walked over to where
they sat. Morning Mr. McDonald. Young man. He sat across from them. I
see youre a single man.
Yes sir, but I know I can gave Hal a
good home. Richard tried to keep his voice even.
Judge Wereton smiled, Caller Bob says
youre a good man. Hal do you want to stay with Mr. McDonald? He watched the
young boy nod. Okay then, you have custody Mr. McDonald. He watched both Hal
and Richard smile. I will be back in six months to see how things are going. Then
we'll talk about adoption.
Thank you Judge. Richard stood
and offered his hand to the judge, smiling at both the judge and his son.
Judge Wereton shook the offered hand. Good
luck to you, too. His smile brightened as he watched the younger man scoop up the
boy and tickle him, and then they left the saloon.
After leaving the judge the two of them
headed over to the lumber mill. After they got the wood ordered, they headed back into
town.
Well, Thanksgiving is coming. It's a
big deal here in town. Richard said as he watched Hal nod.
Hal smiled. I'm glad it is. I have
something to be grateful for now. He watched his new father smile back at him.
They rode over to the livery and returned
the horses they had rented. Then they headed for the hotel restaurant for lunch.
