OCTOBER 29, 1861
Later
that day, Stone got Dean to cover for him at his job while he rode over to Broken Bow.
Daniel happened to see him leave town, and he hurried over to see Teaspoon. The sheriff
wasn't in his office, but just as Daniel was leaving the jailhouse, Teaspoon pulled up.
"Teaspoon, Stone just left town. He's not on to us is he?"
"I
don't know. Maybe he just rode out to see Jewel," the sheriff said.
"He
wasn't heading that way. I watched him head north, not northwest. He could be heading for
Broken Bow." Nervously Daniel moved about waiting for Teaspoon to say something.
"I'll
check it out. You go on back home." Teaspoon watched as Daniel walked slowly to his
dwelling. The sheriff went over to the bordello, a place he seldom visited, so that when
he walked in, Dean was surprised to see him.
"Good
morning, Teaspoon."
"Morning
Dean," he strolled over to the bar and stood in front of the bartender. "How
come you're here instead over at the livery?"
"I
had to look after the place while Stone was out."
"Daniel
said he saw Stone heading out of town like a hornet's nest just landed on him. What was
the all fire hurry?" He was pumping Dean for some information without trying to be so
apparent.
"I'm
not sure. He said he just had to leave town for a little while, and that he'd be back
sometime this evening. I'm not his keeper Teaspoon. He doesn't have to tell me everywhere
he's going." Dean wiped down the bar, not that it needed it, but just for him to be
doing something cause he liked to be kept busy. "Well, did you come in here for a
drink or just to jaw the fat?"
"Just
to jaw," he replied and then left the bordello. Walking back over to the jailhouse he
wondered why Stone had taken off. He knew that Jewel and Stone were engaged. He could be
just going over to Broken Bow to get something special for his fiance. Just as the
sheriff was about to enter the jailhouse, Lou reined up.
"Teaspoon,
I just saw Daniel heading north out of town. Is he going to Broken Bow?"
"Jumpin'
Jehosophat, he's going to ruin everything if him and Stone get into it." He glanced
around town and saw Shyster in front of the hotel. "Is that Ike's horse?" Lou
nodded. "Quick go and get him." Lou didn't wait for anything more to be said,
she went to retrieve Ike.
Ike,
Jennie, Blaine and Lou stepped across the street. Sheriff gave Ike a deputy badge, and
Blaine was thrilled that `Uncle Ike' was going to be a lawman. After appointing Ike in
charge of the town, Teaspoon and Lou rode out.
Upon
their arrival in Broken Bow, Teaspoon and Lou saw all hell breakin' loose. Men were
wildly running up and down the streets shooting off their guns, and the sheriff's body lay
dead in the street. As they rode down the street, they observed Daniel standing in an
alleyway confronting Stone. They rode over and dismounted. "What's going on
here?" Teaspoon sternly asked.
"This
crazy man thinks I killed her. But I just came in here because I saw her lying on the
ground. I wanted to see if she was alright." Stone angrily answered.
"You
killed her." Daniel screamed.
"Daniel
calm down." Teaspoon laid a hand on his shoulder.
Stone
turned around to look down at Raspberry Red. Daniel and Lou moved closer to see her.
Before Teaspoon was going to join them to take a look at the girl, he happened to glance
out on the street and view the stagecoach with a passenger getting off. He turned back to
the problem at hand and went over to look at Raspberry Red. It was uncanny, he thought as
he looked down at the saloon girl. Then a plan hit him, and he withdrew his gun out from
his holster. The other three didn't notice what Teaspoon was doing because they were all
looking at Red.
Lou
and Daniel were shocked to see Stone slump to the ground. They turned around to gape at
Teaspoon, both wondering why he had knocked Stone out, but Teaspoon didn't explain.
"Come on we have work to do. Lou didn't you tell me that Red had a back door to her
room?"
"Yeah
Teaspoon, why?"
Instead
of replying, Teaspoon instructed Lou to quickly go to the livery and bring back a wagon
and to get some blankets. She hurried off to do the sheriff's bidding. He instructed
Daniel to stay with Stone and Red, and that he would be right back. Teaspoon ran off to
get the lady that had got off the stagecoach. The southern belle almost screamed when he
grabbed her by the arm, but he showed her his badge, and she didn't. Reluctantly she
followed him.
Daniel's
mouth flew open when he saw the pretty lady-accompanying Teaspoon. When the southern belle
saw the lady on the ground, she kneeled beside her and began to weep. Lou arrived with the
wagon, and was shocked to see the redheaded lady. She looked exactly like Red.
"Daniel
give me a hand." Teaspoon stooped down and grabbed Red. Daniel helped the sheriff put
the saloon girl in the wagon.
"What
are you doing with my sister?" The southern belle sniffled and brushed away her
tears.
For
when Teaspoon saw her, he had thought that she must be Red's sister. "I thought as
much when I saw ya get off the stagecoach." Teaspoon said after setting the body
down. "Miss have you been in this town before?"
"No,
why?"
"Daniel
did you see Stone kill Red?"
"No,
but I know he did. He didn't want her to talk to us," the doctor stated.
"Then
it would be better if we get proof. Lou, you and Daniel are going to take Red to
Dreamville, and Lou have Jimmy or Kid return here. But first Daniel I need you to help me
put Stone in Red's room."
"I
don't understand. Why are we doing this?" Daniel was totally confused as to what the
older man was up to.
"Miss
. . . Miss?"
"Miss
Mary Gardner, but why are you-"
"Miss
Garner here is going to be Raspberry Red-"
"Now
wait a minute, I will not be my sister. I will not be a saloon girl." Miss Gardner
fumed.
"Do
you want to bring your sister's killer to justice?" Teaspoon waited for an answer
while Miss Gardner struggled with her inner self.
"Well,
I don't know how to be a saloon girl." She replied.
"I'll
give you some quick lessons. Now Daniel give me a hand with Stone." He grabbed a hold
of Stone's legs, and Daniel grabbed the arms and they followed Lou to Red's room. They
dropped him on the bed while Mary stood by silently. "Alright Lou, you and Daniel get
going."
"But
Teaspoon, shouldn't I stay here and help?" Daniel didn't want to leave.
"No,
go with Lou, I don't want Stone to see you."
"I
don't know what you're up to, but I hope it works," the doc followed Lou back to the
wagon. They left town with no problems.
Later
that afternoon down in the saloon, Mary alias Red, was not having a good day. Whenever a
cowhand would hit her on the behind or grab her and pull her down to sit on his lap, she
would go in a frenzy. Teaspoon could tell the bartender thought she was strange. Maybe his
idea wouldn't work after all. If she got angry enough, she might stop pretending to be
Red.
"I
don't like this," Mary whispered to him as she brought an empty mug back to the bar
to be filled. Her voice got louder, "Fill it up, Andrew."
The
bartender just rolled his eyes. He didn't know why Red kept calling him Andrew, when he
liked to be called Andy. She must really be having a bad day, he thought. He filled up the
mug and handed it back to her. He had tried earlier to get her to stop using the name
Andrew, but hadn't succeeded, so he decided to just let it be.
"Hang
on, you're doing good." Teaspoon tried to boost her ego, but she just sighed and went
to deliver the beer to its owner. She sat it down nicely in front of the gentleman, but
the fella was already drunk and in the mood for some little lovin', so he grabbed her,
pulling Mary down on his lap, and he tried for a little kiss, but she pushed his face away
and tried to get up. But the drunk held on firmly. He wasn't about to let his prize get
away.
Teaspoon
knew that Red would need some help, so he went out of the saloon to see what he could
find.
Awakening
in Red's bed, Stone was mystified as to what had taken place. He had a bump on his head as
big as an egg. He moaned and then went out of the room. As he stood at the top of the
stairs looking down, his eyes went wide as he saw Raspberry Red down below. What the heck
was going on here? Was he dreaming? Or was this real? He pinched himself and knew that he
wasn't asleep. He started down the stairs. He would have to find out what was going on.
