JUNE 5, 1861
Rachel and Jesse rode into Dreamville to see Teaspoon. They saw him crossing the street. When Teaspoon saw them, he stopped in midstride and turned to face them. Rachel and Jesse swung down off their horses and greeted him.
"Teaspoon, Jesse and I would like to talk to you."
"Alright, have you two had lunch yet?"
"Yes, we ate with the riders." Rachel replied.
"Then lets go over to the jailhouse. Unless you two want to stand out here and talk."
"The jailhouse is fine." Rachel said. So Rachel and Jesse leading their horses followed Teaspoon over to the jail. Teaspoon had been going over to the hotel to see if he could talk with Walter. He wanted to see if Walter would buy some bibles for the new church that was going to be built. They hadn't finished building it yet because it had been raining the past few weeks, and the land was too muddy, and besides no one wanted to swing a hammer in the rain. But after buying the lumber and the land, there wasn't any money left for anything else.
Teaspoon took his seat behind the desk and crossed his arms. Rachel and Jesse sad down, too. Teaspoon waited patiently to find out what was going on.
"Teaspoon, how do you feel about Jesse going away for a little bit." Rachel began.
"Going away, going where?"
"He wants to go visit Rose, and I thought it was a good idea. He can travel on the train. That way he won't be gone as long. What do you think?" Rachel explained.
"I think that the train costs money. Does he have that kind of money?" Teaspoon asked, not to be mean or to deter Jesse, but money was a very important issue here.
"Well, no, but I thought you might be able to make some type of arrangement with Tally." Rachel answered with a sly grin.
"Hmmm . . . well, let me see what I can do, but I'm not promising anything, Jesse, you understand?"
Jesse nodded, "Thanks, Teaspoon. I appreciate it."
Rachel and Jesse stood up. "I'll see you this evening for supper, right?" She asked.
"I'll be there, and try to keep Cody from eating it all before I get there." Teaspoon said.
"I'll try, but you better not be too late." Rachel grinned and then followed Jesse to the horses.
Teaspoon walked over to the hotel to see Walter, but he wasn't there, so he decided to go to the Joker's Wild Ranch to see Tally about Jesse's trip.
As he got there, he saw Tally arguing with two men. He didn't know who they were, but he had seen them around town, and the older gent had been in town longer. "Good afternoon," Teaspoon said as he stopped Banter in front of the threesome. Immediately the men had shut up when Teaspoon joined them.
"Hi Teaspoon, what can I do for you?" Tally inquired.
"I wanted to talk to you about a train ride, but if your busy, we can talk later."
"No, it's ok sheriff. We were just leaving." John walked off toward his horse. Teaspoon noticed that the other one followed, but reluctantly.
Teaspoon was invited inside, and him and Tally sat down and had a little talk. After hearing Teaspoon's story about Jesse and Rose. He told Teaspoon that he would be glad to let Jesse ride the train to see Rose. Tally had just got back together with Samantha, so where love was concern, he was in a very good mood.
After Teaspoon left, Tally rode over to see Jacy and Jewel.
"Jacy," he said as he stormed through the doorway into her home, "you can't let them. You won't let them, right?"
"What? What are you talking about? Please calm down and explain to me what you're talking about."
"John and Ernest, they want to take Jewel back to Wyoming with them."
"What? Why?"
"They think that if they take her back home with them that she'll get her memory back." Tally angrily replied. Jacy shook her head. That was the last thing that she wanted to happen. "They're not taken her. She's our sister. If anyone can help her get her memory back it's me." As that sank in, Jacy(Jewel) decided that it wouldn't be such a bad idea for them to take her sister with them.
"Maybe they're right."
"What? You've got to be kidding. No one is taking our sister anywhere. If you don't want to look after her then I will."
"It's not that. Come on in and sit down." She took her brother by the hand and led him into the sitting room. She sat down on the sofa and pulled him down beside her. After a few seconds when Tally got his emotions under control, Jacy(Jewel) said, "I think that if John and Ernest took her back to Wyoming that she might get her memory back." Tally was about to speak, but Jacy(Jewel)held up her hand, palm towards his face, meaning for him to wait a minute. Tally was surprised. There was only one person that he had ever seen do that. "Jewel has never been here. These surroundings, these people, she doesn't know. They won't help her get her memory back. But she does know John and Ernest, and maybe their ranch will bring back her memory." Although Jacy(Jewel) really hoped that her sister would never get her memory back. She felt a twinge of quilt. She would have lots of explaining to do if her sister ever got her memory back. She feared that her whole world would come to an end if Jacy ever got her memories back.
"She doesn't know anybody here, but she knows me or knew me. I know things about her that no one else does. I can help her get her memory back."
"Have you? Has she remembered anything since you've been coming her about every day?"
Tally hated the answer he had to give. "No, she hasn't remembered anything. Maybe if you'd let me take her outside, maybe something, a rock or a tree would help spark her memory."
"A rock, a tree. Do you know how absurd that sounds? No, I think if anything is going to trigger her memory, it's someone, not something."
"You never know." Tally simple said.
"Alright, lets make a deal. I'll let you take Jewel outside for a little while, but stay around here, and if Jewel remembers something then I'll keep her here, but if she doesn't then I think she should go with John and Ernest. It might help her, Tally."
Reluctantly Tally agreed to Jacy's conditions. He went upstairs to visit with Jewel, and then Jewel and Tally took a walk outside. Unfortunately she didn't remember anything, so Tally went home no better than when he had got there. The next day, he went to the station to get Jesse.
