APRIL 28, 1861
Rachel was cleaning and straightening the house thinking about several of the riders that had stopped working for the Pony Express. She hated it when her riders up and left. She was just so used to them that it hurt inside when people left. Of course Lee wasn't really gone. She had moved into the house with her and Grace. She liked that. She was glad that Lee was still living here even though she was working for Steven.
Ike on the other hand was gone. He hadn't quit though, and hopefully he would return soon. She also hoped that Ike would find his sister. It would be good for Ike to have some real flesh and blood family. Of course everybody here at the station is Ike's family. They all hope for the best for him, including herself.
Jesse came into the house, "Rachel if you don't need me, I thought I would go fishin'."
Rachel knew that Jesse was having a bad time. He was spending too much time alone. Well, it couldn't be helped she thought because Michael had to spend more time working at his family's ranch because after all he was growing up. Jesse had in the past gone fishin' with Melissa, but Rachel didn't think it was wise to encourage that. She was afraid that him and Michael might loose their friendship over Melissa. But then again she hated seeing Jesse spending most of his time alone.
"I don't have anything for you to do, Jesse. You can go fishin' if you like." Rachel said as she smiled at the young lad.
Jesse started for the door but was stopped by Rachel's next words. "Jesse is it alright if I go fishin' with you?" Jesse did an about face to see if Rachel was serious.
Realizing that she wasn't joking, he replied, "Sure Rachel. I'll grab you a pole." Jesse left to get the equipment while Rachel finished tidying up the kitchen then she went outside to join Jesse. He had their horses already saddled.
"Thanks Jesse," she was referring to him saddling her horse for her.
Jesse nodded, "You're welcome, Rachel."
They rode out of the waystation to Jesse's favorite fishing hole spot. They both leaned against a tree and cast their lines into the river. They didn't talk much. Both just absorbing the sounds and peacefulness of nature.
About a half an hour later Jesse was wishing that he had something to talk to Rachel about. Then he heard the whistle blow of the J & J Railroad Train. "Rachel what do you think about the train in Dreamville?"
"Well, I really haven't gave it much thought at all." So she did so now. "I hope it will bring lots of business to our town. And it will be quicker to get from one place to another." She looked over at Jesse to see his reaction, but there wasn't any. "What do you think about the train?"
"I think that if I had the money that I would ride it to see Rose." Jesse stated.
"Well maybe you should take a ride and go and see Rose. You know that Tally fellow might even let you travel there for free." Rachel thought that it might be for the best if Jesse did take a little trip to see Rose.
Surprised that Rachel would suggest such a thing, Jesse turned to look at her. "Really?"
"Yeah, really." She smiled at Jesse, and Jesse smiled back. It sure would be nice to go and visit Rose he thought just as he felt a tug on his line.
