FEBRUARY 10, 1860
Steven was in town doing some business when he saw Jeldin’s freight wagon outside the general store. Absalom saw Steven coming towards the store. Just as Steven reached the store Prudence came out. As she stepped out Steven said, "Howdy ma’am.""Howdy Mr. . . . " Prudence began but didn’t recognize the gentleman.
Smiling Steven said, "Hello. I'm Steven Johnson. I own the big cattle ranch just north of town. I’ve seen you in town a few times. Well, as you may know there’s a Valentine’s dance coming up. I was wondering if you would like to be my date for the dance.
Smiling Prudence said, "Huh, all the pretty ones are already going."
Steven laughed and said, "Well, they will be as soon as you say yes. I think we would have a good time, and I thought we both could use a break from our children that tire out our patiences. So what do you say? Will you go with me?"
After a moment she answered, "You're Caly's father. Absalom has mentioned seeing her around town. Okay, I'll go with you as long as she doesn’t mind. You are right Absalom is a handful at times. A night with out worrying about him would be great."
Steven nodded and said, "Yes, Caly's mine. She can be a major handful at times, but she won’t mind. She'll be in good hands with her own date for the dance. He seems to be able to get her to be a lady whenever he's around."
Prudence replied, "Yes, I'll go to the dance with you."
Steven smiled and said, "I don't know how he does it, but he does. Great, I will pick you up in time to look at all the stuff that they will be selling. I know Caly as donated some stuff. " Steven said.
"That would be great. I'll see you then." She said as she smiled and walked away.
As he rode home. Steven smiled to himself and thought. Wow! That was easier then I thought. Caly has a date. I hope Michael can find someone to take.
