DO-SI-DO AND AWAY WE GO!

By Ella Davis

Do you want to have fun and meet new people? Square Dancing is friendship set to music. Square dancing brings people together for fun and fellowship. Fun starts on the very first night, even if you’re just learning. Here is a way to meet and make new friends, and to escape the worry and pressures of today’s busy world. And the fun keeps right on going as long as you do. Most square dance groups meet once a week.

Moving in rhythm to the music is a mental and physical challenge. It keeps you mentally on your toes when the square dance caller starts the calls. Your team of eight dancers depends on you. It’s teamwork.

Experienced square dance callers teach you the basic moves and the names of the calls while you practice. The basic moves and steps are then combined into whole dance patterns. You, your partner, and the other partners follow the calls as each arm turn brings you a surprise as you find yourself with a new partner. But as the pattern concludes with all the arm turns, you will find at the end of dance that your are right back with the partner you started with.

In Canada, New Zealand, Australia, as well as the French Colonies, to name a few, is where are "traditional" roots of our heritage square dancing came from. Square dancing is still very popular today. You won’t get bored with it because new steps are always being added, and the routines change.

I went to an open house square dancing club and, even though I was nervous at first because I thought I would look stupid making mistakes, I had lots of fun. The people were very friendly. So friendly that I was surprised when a young girl asked my husband to dance. But then I was equally surprised that an older man asked me to dance. They knew we were new there and wanted to help teach us.

The only thing I knew when we started was the do-si-do. But I learned a few more calls that night too. I know what separate means. It means to stand back to back with your partner. Some of the others got that part wrong in my square dance group, but I got that one right. Promenade is another one I learned. You promenade your gal home by the gal having her left hand in the guy’s left hand and the gal having her right hand in the guy’s right hand with the left hands being under the right hands.

I made mistakes, but I had a great time. Those that had been doing square dancing for a long time even got confused and made mistakes, too. I laughed and smiled most of the night. It was fun to get out and do something different for a change. We might join and take the square dancing lessons that start next Tuesday and last for twenty weeks.

Carousel Riding Program

Special Guest "Horse Talk" Writer

Have any of you out there ever wanted to own a horse? I have! Well, while I still don’t own a horse, at least I get to do the next best thing. Through the credit union, I volunteered to work at Carousel Riding Stables, and I had orientation on Wednesday night. Orientation consisted of walking from one corral to the other following Carol, the owner of the ranch, around while she fed the horses.

There was one other volunteer working that night. Her name is Teresa, and she’s been a volunteer there for two years. Carol told me that she has 35 volunteers, 12 of them adults and the rest teen-agers, but she would like more adults.

Carol owns 16 horses (3 of them ponies), 4 dogs (one named Patty), 2 cats (one named Victor and the other named Miss Kitty), 4 goats, and one sheep (his name Bubba and he acts like a dog and can even shake hands with you). I remember some of the horses names; they were Jake, Speedy, and Carousel (retired and will be featured in a National Geographic special in November). The only other horse’s name I remember is Katy. I couldn’t forget that name, now could I? Katy was all brown, and no white.

Carol told me that there would have been kids out riding tonight, but they weren’t because it was too windy. She said there will be a crowd on Saturdays with volunteers and the kids (disabled kids). She also said I could come out any night of the week to help with the horses, but she reiterated the need for volunteers on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

I start my volunteer work there on Saturday the 25th. Carol said she would start me out holding a kid in the saddle to make sure he/she doesn’t fall off.

I’m looking forward to it. I’ll be learning how to take care of horses. I told Carol I would like to own my own horse, and she said work here for a year and you won’t. I’ll see.

I’ll keep you informed of my experiences. I’ve rode some, but haven’t taken care of horses before. This will be a good learning experience for me.

Lou's Love Lore

How to make guys more romantic

lou.jpg (11773 bytes)

Don't Be Shy. Send All TheThings You Hate About A Date To Me! I Will Print Them!

I'll Also Print All The Things You Do Like About A Date!

If You Have Any Questions About Relationships, Send Them In. I'll Try To Help You!

First Relationship Question for Lou is:

How do you get a guy to be more romantic?

The gal has to be receptive to the fella's romance techniques first. A gal can drop hints, but of course if the no good cowpoke ain't cotton to the idea of her being romantic, there ain't much a gal can do. Also, the gal can take the initiative and start doing romantic things and hopefully the cowpoke will get the idea. Next issue will include what ladies like about dates. And in a future issue, I will give you some romantic ideas.
