JULY 22, 1860
Michael returned to the barn as Caller Bob was talking with his father. As he entered he heard Caller Bob say, "I am glad shes back to herself. Thank you for agreeing to help raise money for the town fund."
Walking over Michael said, "Yes, its good to have her back to herself. I want to thank you for agreeing to have her and Lee switch jobs. I think it would do her good to be around her friends some more." Although a little hurt because Michael knows that she trusts them more then she does him, he doesnt let it show.
Caller Bob nodded and handed Michael his card saying, "I have a card for you, too. Caly got word of you having her switch with someone, so she wanted you to switch with Jesse."
Michael looked at the card Caller Bob gave him. Smiling he said, "Shes
sneaky. It wont be so bad to switch with Jesse. I wonder if he can handle what I do
around here."
Steven smiled. It seemed Michael was finely accepting Caly's friendship and possible
relationship with Buck. He knew Melissa was a big part of helping Michael to accept it.
Putting his hand on Michaels shoulder, "Son didn't you have plans to see if Melissa wanted to go fishing with you?"
Placing the card in his pocket Michael said, "Oh yes, I did. Thank you pa."
He waved at them as he rode from the barn and headed towards town to find Melissa. Riding into town he saw Melissa entering the restaurant. Quickly changing his plans Michael followed her. He waited till after she was done talking before he approached her. "Melissa would you care to join me for a picnic and some fishing?"
Melissa smiled, "I would love to. Let me get my pole, okay?"
"Okay, that will give me time to get a basket ordered from here. I'll meet you in front of the store." Melissa nodded and walked out to get her fishing pole while Michael bought their lunch.
As Michael carried the basket from the restaurant over to where he was to meet Melissa, he heard someone speak his name, so he turned to see Jemima waving at him. She was walking with her mother. He waved back to her, but then as he turned around he bumped into Melissa. Blushing he looked down, "I'm sorry Melissa. I was distracted for a moment."
Melissa watched as Destiny and Jemima walked up the steps to the boarding house. She felt a pang of jealousy flash through her for it had been Jemima that Michael had escorted to the Valentines Dance. She couldnt help but think that there might be something between the two of them that she didnt know about.
"Melissa are you ok?" Michael waved his free hand in front of her face.
Finally Melissa smiled at him and nodded that she was okay. "I have my pole. Lets get our lunch and get going. I even saddled Braids, too."
Michael offered his right arm since the basket was in his left hand, and Melissa wrapped her left arm around his while holding her pole in her right hand. Michael escorted Melissa to Braids and helped her mount up, and then he went over to Bear and mounted up. They headed out to do some fishing at their favorite pond.
