AUGUST 30, 1860
Melissa had read the letter Jacy had left her a thousand times or more. She was hurt that Jacy had lied to her about their pa. And after the shock and anger had worn off, she was upset and missing her sister.
When she had got home from school a few weeks ago, and Jacy had went into their room to be alone, she had went outside and sat down in front of the PEG. She hadn't known about the lies Jacy had told about their pa then. She had found that out from Samantha who had stopped by later to see Jacy. That's when Melissa went into their bedroom to get Jacy, but all she found was the envelope that she accidentally kicked across the floor when she had entered.
Inside the envelope was a letter and some money for Melissa to switch some people back to their original jobs, including Melissa. After taking Braids and searching for her sister and not finding her, she rode out to Caller Bob's farm and gave him the money to switch people. Jacy had wanted to put some things back to normal before she left, so she had gave her instructions to switch herself and Kathleen, Jacy and Kimberly, Desiree and Walter, and Ted and Ivy.
Her heart was totally broken. She couldn't eat, drink, or even think. Melissa was a walking zombie. She had stopped attending school. She had Tally deliver the rest of their furniture from the general store to their new home. She put everything in its proper place. Melissa wanted their home to look exactly like Jacy had described it to her for when Jacy returned. The house was all ready for occupants, but Melissa wasn't ready to move in yet. She was waiting for Jacy. She knew she would be too lonely out their all by herself, so she continued to live at the PEG.
Melissa watched as Desiree and Ivy walked over to the bank. Caller Bob hadn't switched them yet. He had, however, switched Melissa, Kathleen, and Kimberly. She wondered why he hadn't changed the others yet, but she wasn't going to pry. Besides she didn't feel like doing much nowadays. The only thing she did every day was work on the newspaper and made sure that it got distributed because she needed the money to live on. She wasn't as good a writer as Jacy, and Melissa knew the newspaper was lacking in interesting articles, but still many people purchased it. She figured it was because they felt sorry for her.
Teaspoon saw Melissa sitting outside the PEG, and he decided to walk over and reassure her that he was still looking for Jacy and hopefully we'll see her soon. As he walked across the street he watched Walter ride into town and stop at his hotel. He thought Caller Bob sure is keeping Walter and Ted as saloon girls for a long time. But he knew why. They were drawing in the crowd for the saloon.
"Good morning, Melissa." Teaspoon said as he stood in front of her.
"Good morning," Melissa solemnly said.
Blythe came walking out of the store, and she saw Teaspoon and Melissa. She walked over to join them. Since Melissa was so sad, she decided that Jacy still must be missing. She decided not to approach that subject, so she said, "Hi Teaspoon, hi Melissa." Melissa greeted Blythe the same way she did Teaspoon, and Blythe's smile turned into a concerned expression.
"Good morning, Miss Blythe, how are you this morning?" Teaspoon asked as he smiled at the post office attendant.
"I'm fine. I'm glad Kid is back as a Pony Express rider. I just wish that Charlie was back at the Silver Spoon." Blythe wishfully said.
"That will be arranged soon." Ivy happily said as she came upon the trio.
"It will?" Blythe was surprised. She wondered who would pay for Charlie.
"Well, I'm going to go and pay for Noah and Charlie to change back." Ivy was tired of Clover being so close to Noah, and she knew that Noah was exhausted from having to constantly keep Clover away from him.
"Shouldn't you be working at the bank?" Melissa asked.
"I should, but Ted came in and he offered to fill in for me for a little while, so that I could ride out to Caller Bob's and pay to get Noah back at the waystation. I've also decided to pay for Charlie, too, so that we don't have to rely on Clover running the place." Ivy smirked.
"That's good." Melissa replied, and Teaspoon and Blythe agreed.
Ivy started to continue on her way to the livery to rent a horse when she thought that she might be able to help get Melissa a little bit out of her stupor. She turned around and looked at Melissa, "Melissa, could you do me a favor? I hate riding alone. Would you ride with me?"
Melissa contemplated her answer for a few minutes, and then she decided that Braids could use some exercise since she hadn't been riding her much lately. "Alright." Melissa stood up and started to follow Ivy.
After Ivy and Melissa left, Blythe said goodbye to Teaspoon and went back to work. She was happy that Charlie would be returning to his regular job soon. She missed waving to him and seeing his smile every morning.
Teaspoon walked over to the saloon. Jimmy had volunteered to give Teaspoon a hand with combing the territory looking for Jacy. Several of the Pony Express riders were already out looking, including Cody. This job switching just happened to be at a good time for Cody. Since he had Javier to look after the store, Cody could search for Jacy more.
Shortly after collecting Jimmy, Teaspoon and Tyson rode out north of town in hopes that they would find Jacy soon. Of course when they arrived back in town that evening without a third person in tow, Melissa went to bed that night with tears sliding down her cheeks again.
