MAY 13, 1861
It was early morning and Melissa and Doc Daniel came riding into Starshine Haven. They tethered their horses to the post in front of the house and Daniel followed Melissa inside.
"Jacy, we're here." Melissa called out for she didn't know where Jacy and Jimmy were because she hadn't stopped at the house. She had gone into town to get the doctor.
She came to the top of the stairs. "We're up here. Come on up Doc." She waited until Melissa and Daniel started climbing the stairs and then she turned around, walked down the hall a few feet and turned right. She waited in front of the door to the bedroom until she saw Melissa and Daniel then she entered and went beside the bed where Jimmy had fallen asleep.
Daniel took off the piece of skirt that Jacy had used to bandage Jimmy's head. She took it from him and wadded it up for it was all bloody. She handed it to Melissa to dispose of for her. Melissa took it and left the room.
Jimmy groggily woke up and Daniel went about putting a new clean bandage on his head. He examined Jimmy and then asked him a few questions, but the only two he could answer was his name and Jacy's, and that was only because she had told him that. "You get some rest, Jimmy. I'll check with ya again tomorrow." Doc told him.
Jacy and Daniel left the room. She closed the door behind them and followed Doc Daniel down to the front door. Before opening the door, Daniel said, "He has a concussion. And of course you probably already guessed that he has amnesia." Melissa joined them in front of the door as Doc was telling Jacy that Jimmy has amnesia. "I'm not sure how long he will have amnesia. It could be a day or two -- weeks or months. It's very unpredictable. And no one knows how but sometimes patients get their memory back, and sometimes they don't. Anything or nothing at all could trigger his memory into remembering who he was before the accident. I'll check back in on him tomorrow." He turned to go, but then stopped. "Are you going to keep him here?"
"Of course, where else do you think he would go -- the Pony Express station? I don't think so. He doesn't know anyone there. It might be too much for him. Besides I -- we have plenty of room. The Pony Express riders are always coming and going. I can stay right here and write up my articles and just go into the newspaper for a few hours to print it out and sale them. He'll get better attention here. And I don't think submitting him to another environment at this time would be healthy. Do you?"
Doc Daniel held up his hands, "Ok, Ok. I was just looking for a yes or no answer. I think it's fine that he stays here. You seem to be taking care of him alright." He smiled at them both. "I'll see ya tomorrow." Daniel left the house. On his way home he thought about Jacy and Jimmy. Could it be that Jacy loved Jimmy? Well, it wasn't any of his business. Besides he had enough at home to think about, Meghan and Luke. He hoped that their marriage would survive.
"Ok Jacy, I got the doctor. Now I'm going to go to Two Forks and see how Jake is doing?"
"Melissa!" She didn't know what to say to her sister. She wanted her to stay. Well, not stay here but to stay in Dreamville. She didn't want her with Jake. Sincerely she said, "Melissa, I don't want you to get hurt by Jake. I care about you. I know I haven't always showed it, but I do. I just don't want you to get hurt."
"I'm not going to get hurt. I want to be with Jake." Melissa stated. She didn't want to hurt her sister. She loved Jacy, but lately she felt as though -- well as though Jacy wasn't the Jacy she had grown up with. Now she really was confused. She didn't want to leave Jacy, but she wanted to go and see how Jake was."
"What about Michael? Don't you think you're hurting him?" She inquired.
"Well -- I -- He's just a kid. He's so immature. Jake is so manly -- so different. He knows how to treat me like a lady."
"Alright go, but just promise me that you will tell me before you run off with Jake. Ok?" Seeing her hesitation, she continued, "I won't try to stop you. I just want to know where you two will be heading. Ok?"
"Alright." Melissa left. She saddled Braids in the barn and then rode her out. She had missed her horse dearly and was happy to be riding her again. She took off following the same trail that she had just rode in on, and the trail that she had just left on five days ago.
She opened the door to Jimmy's room. He was sleeping, so she pulled the door to and continued down the hall. She was heading for the attic. The room that her twin was occupying. She had moved her up there after putting Jimmy to bed. She didn't want Melissa to see the real Jacy, at least not yet -- not until she figured out what she was going to do. She had two people with amnesia, and she hadn't decided what she was going to do. She knew she wanted Jimmy to be hers and not Lee's, but she wasn't sure if she was going to keep pretending to be Jacy or not -- since the real Jacy was back -- but then again she didn't know who she was. But how long would that last? How long would it be before she gained her memory? The doc said it could be days, months or even never. She shook her head because she couldn't decide on what to do.

Melissa rode into Two Forks. She knew the location of the doctor's home because Jacy had told her after she had threatened to leave her and Jimmy and go onto Two Forks instead of Dreamville. She spotted the house at the edge of town. She was about to knock on the front door when she heard laughter. It was coming from behind the house. Thinking it was the doc's wife, Melissa went around the house, but as she got nearer to the end, she heard Jake's voice. This baffled Melissa for she thought that he would be hurt and in bed.
She walked down the length of the house and peered around as she heard Jake and a young lady talking. She saw the pretty curled blonde-haired girl. She was blushing at Jake's words. "Why Suzie, a pretty little girl like you should have lots of fellas swarming all of you. You know if I didn't have this broken leg, I'd take you to that dance tonight myself."
"OH Jake! Maybe when you're well, we can go dancing." Suzie suggested.
"I couldn't think of anything else I would rather do than twirl you around a big dance floor." Jake replied. "Come, sit down beside me. Tell me more about yourself."
That was all Melissa heard for she ran off with tears streaming down her face. She mounted Braids and spurred her into a run. She didn't slow her down to a walk until ten miles outside of town. The thing that kept repeating itself through Melissa's mind all the way back Dreamville was, 'Jacy was right. She was right about Jake. How could I have been so wrong?' She was so confused, angry and hurt.
She stopped a couple of miles away from her home. What would she do? She hated admitting that she was wrong and that Jacy was right. She thought and thought and then decided to just tell Jacy that she had changed her mind. She was almost home when she changed her mind. She couldn't do it. Jacy would know that she wasn't telling the truth. She couldn't face Jacy right now, so instead she went into town and purchased a room for the night. She would stay at the hotel until she decided what she wanted to do.
