NOVEMBER 4, 1860

The dream was frightening in its realism and Meg wrapped her blanket more tightly around her. If she closed her eyes she could still experience it. The way the flowers and grass smelled, the brightness of the sun shining down on the small crowd that had gathered, the sound of a child-her child, as it cried in Luke's arms and the triumphant look on Elena and Corey's face as they looked down at her grave. Meg shuddered and opened her eyes to stare out the window hoping to find solace in the darkness that could chase her fears away.

Luke rolled onto his side seeking the warmth of his wife's body only to find that her side of the bed was empty. Slowly he opened his eyes to look for Meg but the room was darkened, the only light coming from the moon. Luke heard movement on the other side of the room and turned slowly towards the window. Meg was sitting on the window seat, a thick blanket wrapped around her burgeoning body, staring out into the night.

"Meghan?"

"Hmm?"

"Are you alright?" He asked as he sat up.

"Yes." She replied softly. "Go on back to sleep." She waited for a few moments then sighed when she heard him strike a match and light the lantern beside the bed. She turned her face from him and looked out the window.

Luke frowned as he watched his wife, something was wrong, and they were going to talk about it, and they would talk about it tonight. "Meghan come on into bed, you're going to catch a chill."

"I'm not tired. I'll come in a little while, go back to sleep."

Luke let out a frustrated sigh before he swung his legs out from under the blanket and rose off the bed. He made his way to the window where he sat in front of Meghan, but she refused to look up at him. Grasping her chin in his hand, he tilted her head up and was shocked to find that she had been crying.

"What's wrong Sweetheart?"

"It's all so silly Luke."

He framed her face in his hands and caressed her cheeks with his thumbs. "If it makes you cry then it's not silly."

"I had a nightmare."

"About Simon?"

She shook her head. "My death." She took a shuddering breath. "I dreamt that I had died in childbirth, and I saw my funeral. You were there with the baby and Corey and Elena were on either side of you, both of them looking smug . . . almost happy."

"How did I look?"

Meg's brows furrowed. "What do you mean?"

"Was I happy, too?" He asked worriedly. Luke needed to know if she thought he would be happy or passive at her death, too.

She bit her lip as she tried to think back on the dream. "No. No, you looked sad."

He exhaled in relief. "That's because I love you, and it would destroy me if anything happened to you. Now as far as Elena goes, I thought we had come to the conclusion that you had nothing to worry about."

"We did." She agreed.

"And Corey . . . well I don't know what's going on with you and Corey. Have you two spoken since the party?"

"No. I miss her, and I acted so stupid that night that I wouldn't blame her if she never wanted to speak to me again."

"I think you two should talk . . . sit down and have a nice long talk." Luke shivered then rose from the bench and pulled her up to her feet, he then led her to the bed. He held up the quilt and waited for Meg to slide in under it then followed her in and pulled her to his side. "Once you two make up, I'm sure you'll sleep better."

"I hope so."

He kissed the top of her head. "I know so."

Meghan smiled against his chest then looked up guiltily. "Have I apologized to you for the way I acted that night?"

Luke smiled tenderly. "I never asked for one."

"But still, I should give you one." She kissed his chest sweetly. "I'm sorry Luke. I hate being angry with you, but I know it's my fault."

He rubbed her back gently. "It's not your fault. You're pregnant, and Daniel says things happen to women when they're pregnant. Besides, I forgave you the moment it happened." He paused and yawned loudly. "Meghan can I ask you something?"

"Yes."

"What's brought all this about?"

"Guilt." She responded with a small smile. Meg pushed off of his chest and sat back against her pillows then looked down at him. "I went to see Serena for a check up, and I felt her baby move."

Luke's eyes went wide with awe, and he sat up and turned to face her. "What was it like?"

She smiled broadly, her eyes glistening with excitement, and Luke could've sworn his heart stopped beating. "It was amazing." She said breathlessly and placed his hand with hers on top of it on her abdomen. "To think there's a tiny life in here is incredible in itself, but to finally feel it move, even if it was someone else's is beyond anything I've ever felt before. I realized as I felt that baby move, that they made a miracle, a tiny little miracle." Her voice broke and she grasped his face in her hands. "I love you so much for giving me that miracle, too."

"We did it together, and we will share in the miracle, Wildcat."

Meg giggled at the use of her pet name and lifted her face to his for a kiss. Luke obliged quickly and pulled her down to lay by his side satisfied to hold her against him for the rest of the night.
