SEPTEMBER 24, 1860

Meghan was humming happily as she prepared breakfast when she heard the commotion coming from upstairs. She looked up at the ceiling and grimaced, those two were likely to break as much furniture as they moved. She took a calming breath as she turned off the stove then wiped her hands and went upstairs to see what she could do to help.

Moments later she stood in the doorway of her child's future nursery and frowned at the two men who were staring at each other from opposite ends of her hope chest. She cleared her throat and instantly both men turned their attention to her.

"What's going on?" She asked.

"We uh . . . went to pick up the chest and it . . . slipped." Luke replied.

Meg stepped into the room and knelt down to examine the big wooden box she had been given as a wedding present. "Is it broken?"

"No. Don't worry about it Meg we'll be done here in a bit." Ian said gently. "And you can be sure we'll be starving after, so I hope you're making your famous hot cakes for breakfast." He didn't want to get Meghan involved in his feud with Luke because his friend had already warned him about getting her upset.

Meg arched an eyebrow at first one man then the other, she knew there was more going on here then met the eye. As she rose she felt a wave of dizziness come over her and she faltered slightly as the room spun. Before she knew what had happened, Luke had her in his arms and was yelling at Ian to go into town for Serena.

As Ian ran out of the house Luke placed Meg back into bed and wrapped their hand made quilt, another wedding gift, around her shoulders even as she repeatedly told him that she was fine.

"Stay there." He commanded. "I'm going to get you some water."

"But Luke-" Meg said as she tried to sit up.

"Stay." Luke's tone forbade any arguments.

Meg rolled her eyes and laid back. Moments later her husband returned with a glass of cold water. "Drink this."

Meg grabbed the cup and sipped from it. "I'm fine. It was just a dizzy spell."

"You are not fine until Serena or your father says so." He pushed the cup back up to her lips.

Meg glared at her husband as she drank. Then she softened her features when she saw how pale he had become. She placed a tender hand on his cheek. "I'm fine Luke, really." She said softly.

Luke inhaled deeply, kissed her palm then laid back against the headboard and stared down at his wife. "Lord, Meg, I got so scared when I saw you sway."

She snuggled against his side and leaned her head on his shoulder. "I'm going to be fine, you'll see."

A half hour later, Ian came running into the room, an out of breath Serena behind him. She glanced down at Meghan worriedly. "Are you alright?"

Meghan nodded and sat up. "I'm fine, but try telling that to these two."

"Alright you two, out." She said sternly. When Luke began to protest, Serena informed him that she was the doctor, and she didn't want anyone to interfere while she was checking her patient. With a gentle shove she pushed both men out of the room and closed the door behind them, then she turned back to Meghan.

"Your friend was adamant that I come, he said that you fainted. Are you sure you're okay?" Serena asked softly.

Meghan sighed. "I didn't faint. I just got a little dizzy and lost my balance. Luke scooped me up and dropped me into bed before I could get my bearings again."

Serena began her examination. "Has this happened before?"

"Once or twice."

"Have you been eating properly?" She inquired.

Meg nodded. "Properly and often. Look at me, I'm as big as you are, and you're almost two months further along then I am."

"You are not too big, Meghan dear. Have you and Luke been arguing lately?"

"No."

"Not even about that young man downstairs?" Serena asked slyly.

Meghan frowned. "What are you getting at Serena?"

"You're father told me about him. I was just wondering how Luke's relationship with this young man was affecting you."

"I'll admit that I get upset at the fact that Luke and Daddy aren't willing to give Ian a chance, but I don't think that has anything to do with why I got dizzy."

Serena sat back, her examination complete. "You're right, it doesn't. Have you thought about getting Ian out of the house? Maybe introduce him around town?"

"Sure I have. But I don't know how I can do that when daddy says I shouldn't be seen riding around with him, and Luke can barely tolerate him, so I doubt he'll be taking him out to the saloon anytime soon." She paused a second then her face lit up. "I got it."

Serena smiled, she loved it when Meghan's face brightened. It always reminded her of the child she had met six years before. "What?"

"I'll have a party."

"A party?"

Meg nodded quickly and turned to her stepmother. "Yeah, there a few new citizens in Dreamville, what better way to introduce them to the town then to have a party? We could do it for Halloween."

"A costume party? Like the ones we used to go to in Boston?" Serena asked ecstatically. She was getting wrapped up in Meg's enthusiasm.

"Yes. It could be fun."

"I love it. If you need any help planning, you can count me in." Meghan accepted her help, and Serena then left to head back to the clinic but not before stopping to assure both Luke and Ian that Meghan was going to be fine.

Luke came back into the bedroom a few minutes after Serena left and once again took up position beside Meg on the bed.

"Aren't you going to work?" Meghan asked as he sat back.

"Nope." Luke answered as he pulled her to his side. "Corey can take care of the shop for one day, and Serena said she'd also tell Walter that you were taking the day off." When Meg opened her mouth to protest, he covered her lips with his. "Humor me for one day and just take it easy, you're not quitting you're just taking a day off."

Meg nodded once. "Okay. Did Serena tell you my idea?"

He shook his head and stared down at her questioningly. "No, what idea?"

"Well, I was thinking we could have a Halloween party. It would be a great way for the town to come together and meet the new citizens and get reacquainted with each other too."

Luke pondered the idea briefly then smiled. "I like it. Any idea for costumes?"

Meg frowned. "No. But give me a day or two and I'll figure something out."

As the couple stayed in bed talking, Ian drove Serena back into town. When he got back he went upstairs and knocked on the door softly to find out if Meg was really all right. Meghan assured him that she was. Then told him about the party and he volunteered to help out anyway he could.

"I'm sorry if I scared you Ian." Meghan said as he turned to leave.

The young man smiled gently at her. "It's alright." He turned to leave again, but this time Luke's voice stopped him. Ian turned to him suspiciously.

"I wanted to thank you for bringing Serena back here so quickly." Luke said.

"I'd do it again." He shrugged. "Gotta make sure Meghan is okay, right?"

Luke nodded. "Right. I owe you one Ian."

Ian shook his head. "We'll call it even if you swear to me that Meg will never do that in front of me again. She just about scared ten years off of my life."

Meghan giggled and buried her red face in Luke's shoulder. "Sorry."

Luke kissed the top of her head and Meg sighed sweetly. Ian couldn't help but feel jealous at the relationship they shared. "I'm gonna let you get some rest." Ian said. "I'm gonna take Rogue out for a ride, I'll be back later."

"Have fun Ian." Meghan replied.

"I will." As Ian left with images of him finding someone who loved him as much as Meg loved Luke, the couple napped the morning away.
