AUGUST 8, 1860
Meghan approached the counter with a wide smile. "Good afternoon, Blythe."
The young woman looked up and returned the smile. "Good afternoon, how are you today?"
"Can't complain. I have three letters that I need posted right away." Meg explained and handed the envelopes over to Blythe. "They're kind of important.
The post mistress looked over the letters and nodded. "Then I'll be sure to get them out as soon as possible. I see you're writing to Luke's parents, will they be visiting us again soon?"
Meg smiled. "Probably sometime next spring. I'm sure they won't be able to stay away from-" Meg stopped and thought a moment and deciding there was no reason not to tell Blythe the happy news she continued. "You might as well know because I won't be able to hide it in another few weeks."
Blythe leaned in closer to listen.
Meg inhaled deeply and placed a hand tenderly on her abdomen. "Luke and I are expecting."
"A baby?" Blythe asked, then laughed. "Of course a baby, I'm so happy for you. Congratulations."
"Thanks I appreciate it, we're expecting the newest member of the Saunders family in March." Meg replied. "So was that Kid that I saw leave here with a big grin?"
The other woman blushed. "Yes, we were discussing the job switching in town."
"Crazy isn't it?" Meg said with a laugh.
Blythe agreed. "I hear Luke is an Express Rider, how does he like it?"
Meg shrugged. "He hates being away from me because of my condition but we're coping well, and he's been switched with Buck, so I'm still well taken care of. Luke has placed me in his care and Buck is no slacker, the woman that wins his heart will be very lucky indeed. Other than that, Luke likes the physical aspects of the job but he worries about the dangers of riding to deliver the mail."
Blythe smiled. "I can't believe some of the switches though. I mean Luke and Buck seem like an unlikely switch but some of them are really strange."
Meg nodded and motioned towards the front of the store. "Like Cody?"
Blythe laughed. "Yes, but I mean I don't understand why some people would switch. It's not like I'd like to do any job in this town, especially changing places with a prostitute."
Meg frowned. "Someone actually switched places with one of the girls at the brothel?"
Blythe glanced at Meg in confusion. "I thought everyone knew."
Meg shook her head. "I didn't. Who is it?"
"Corey."
Meg's mouth dropped open. How is it that no one had told her? If everyone knew then why hadn't Buck told her? She sighed deeply and without a good-bye to Blythe she practically ran out of the store and towards the barbershop to see if Vanessa was there for herself.
She walked into her husband's shop and stopped in her tracks. Buck was sitting in one of the chairs talking with Vanessa. Immediately he noticed Meg's presence and stood up.
"Where is Corey?" Meg asked.
Buck glanced over at Vanessa and frowned. He hadn't told Meg about the two girls switching because he was hoping to spare Meg's feelings in her delicate condition. "I can explain."
"Where is she?"
Vanessa cleared her throat. "We were switched."
Meg glared at the two of them then turned, stormed out and headed towards the brothel. If no one would do what was right then she had to do it herself. Buck asked Vanessa to watch the store and ran out behind Meghan.
"Meghan wait, don't go in there." Buck said as he caught up to her outside of the brothel.
"Corey's in there, and I mean to drag her out."
"Let me do it, this is no place for a lady."
Meghan rolled her eyes. "I'm a married woman Buck, I'm not as innocent as I once was."
Before Buck could respond Meg turned, swung open the door and gasped. Buck turned to see what she was staring at and groaned softly. Luke and Elena were standing in the foyer kissing.
