AUGUST 8, 1860
Luke laid back on his bunk and groaned. He had just gotten back from a run and was exhausted. He knew that switching jobs was ultimately for a good cause, but he couldn't wait for Meg to pay to get him out of this. He wanted to get back to his old life and into his own bed. The door opened and Tyson walked in. Luke glanced over to find the other man staring at him intently.
"What?"
Tyson looked down at the ground not sure how to introduce the subject.
"I'd really like to get some sleep Tyson, please tell me what's on your mind."
"Did you know that your wife's best friend is working in the brothel?"
Luke sat up quickly; all traces of fatigue gone. "Are you sure?"
The other man nodded. "I think she was switched. I just thought you'd want to know."
Luke's eyes narrowed. "How did you find out?"
Tyson put his hands up in surrender. "Most of the town knows. This isn't gonna do great things for her reputation you know."
Luke rose from the bed and grabbed his hat. "If anyone asks tell them I'll be back in a while."
"Where are you going?"
"To get Corey out. If Meg finds out where she is she'll be devastated."
Luke reined in Silver Tide and tethered him to the hitching post in front of the Chateau. He looked around the street to make sure that no one would see him go in and noticed Meg's horse, Golden Rod, hitched to their buckboard outside of the general store. He'd have to be quick so she wouldn't realize he was there. With one last glance around, Luke entered the brothel.
He was shocked as he looked around the foyer of the large establishment. It wasn't like any brothel he'd ever been to before. This was much more elegant, in fact if he hadn't known what the Chateau was he'd assume it was a first class hotel.
A low gasp had Luke turning his attention to a doorway to his right. He almost didn't recognize Elena in her "work" clothes and couldn't stop staring at the expanse of flesh she was showing.
Elena smiled slyly and sauntered up to the one man she truly desired in this town. "I knew that my prayers would be answered eventually." She purred.
Luke cleared his throat and turned his head so he wouldn't be staring down at her ample cleavage. "I'm here to see Corey."
Elena raised her eyebrows. "And here I thought you were a good and honorable man."
Luke frowned. "What do you mean?"
"Well, if you were here to seek out my services I could easily convince myself that you were looking for a night that wouldn't mean anything, but to seek out Corey, your wife's best friend, well that's just evil."
"I'm not looking for her to - you know."
"So maybe then I can help you." Elena replied as she stepped closer.
Luke took a step back and bumped into a small table. "No. I just need to talk to Corey."
Elena reached out and trailed a finger down his chest. "Are you sure I can't get you anything else?"
Luke shook his head but Elena stepped in closer, pinning him between her and the table. Without warning she grabbed the back of his neck and pulled his head down for a deep kiss. Luke grabbed her arms and prepared to shove her away but a soft cry from the doorway had the prostitute pulling away.
Elena jumped apart from Luke guiltily and stared at the open door. Meghan and Buck stood staring dumbfounded at the scene in front of them. Luke groaned softly and began walking towards his wife.
Meg shook her head slowly, tears glistening in her eyes then turned and ran out of the brothel.
Luke ran out behind her. "Meg wait let me explain." He called out.
She turned to him. "I don't need an explanation I saw very clearly what was happening."
"It's not what you think." He said as he caught up to her. "She kissed me."
Meg arched an eyebrow. "That's not what it looked like."
"I was trying to push her away."
"Or you could've been trying to pull her in closer."
Luke sighed. "Meg, I love you. Why would I want to share someone else's bed?"
Meg shrugged. "You tell me." Suddenly she felt a pain in her abdomen and clutched her stomach.
Luke's eyes opened wide and he reached out to guide her to a seat outside. "Are you okay? Is it the baby?"
The pain quickly subsided, and she nodded. "I'm fine it passed."
"I think you should see Serena."
Meg rolled her eyes and she pulled out of his grasp. "It was nothing Luke, stop worrying and go back to your hussy."
Luke caressed his wife's cheek. "Please believe me. I would never go to a brothel because you're all I need. I was there to find Corey."
Meg stared deep into his eyes and found that he was sincere. "And did you find her?"
"No. Elena cornered me before I got inside."
Meg sighed. "We have to get her out of there."
Luke leaned over and kissed his wife's cheek tenderly. "We will I promise. So what were you doing there?"
"Same as you."
Luke smiled. "Good I may have thought you were there to see Tally."
Meg giggled. "No. In fact Buck tried to talk me out of going inside. He said it was no place for a lady."
"Is he taking good care of you?" Luke asked, the concern evident in his voice.
"Yes. I didn't think anyone could be as concerned as you but he's as bad as you are." She said with a giggle. "When are you coming home?"
"As soon as you pay to get me out."
"Okay soon, because I miss you so much." Meg replied sadly.
"I miss you too."
Luke leaned over to kiss his wife but she pulled back. "What is it?"
"Does she kiss better than I do?"
"There's no comparison between a kiss of pure love and one of lust."
"That's not an answer Luke."
"It was different Meg. Not better just different. I prefer your kisses though."
Meg smiled brightly. "You better."
"Now Mrs. Saunders if you don't mind, there is nothing I'd like better than to go home and spend a few hours with you lying in my arms-."
Meg bit her lip. "I like the sound of that."
"Sleeping." Luke finished.
"Sleeping?"
Luke hugged his wife tightly. "I am exhausted. I just got back from a run and I need to rest."
Meg returned the embrace. "I can arrange that, and later we can get rid of Buck and share a romantic home cooked meal together."
"Sounds heavenly." Luke replied with a wide grin. "I do love you Meghan. Elena means nothing to me."
Meg looked up at him tenderly. "I know." She answered but a part of her wasn't completely convinced.
