MARCH 25, 1860

                Dear Mum and Dad,

Well, I did i. I finally did it. I wrote you two weeks telling you that I was having a hard
time asking Meg to be my wife. I did it yesterday. I finally got the nerve to ask her.
And she accepted!!!!! We have not set a date yet. I will let you know as soon as we do.

I would dearly love to have you there at my wedding, but I understand that you can’t
make it. After all you have a business to run and all.

How are things going at the station? How is that baby that you found? Any luck in
finding her parents? I hope that the law allows you to keep her. You would make
Deidr great parents. I know I couldn’t have chosen better parents. Let me know how
          little DeeDee is.

                                        Love your son,
                                        Luke

                Dear Corey,

This is Luke Saunders. I am writing to tell you of some news that I’m sure that Meg
will tell of. Please don’t tell her of this letter.

I have asked Meghan to be my wife and she has accepted. I’m sure she will tell you all
about it. But I have to give you credit. I was trying to cheer her up after you left and
realized that I have been in love with her since before we left Boston. I knew it then,
but did not admit it to myself until I was trying to cheer her up.

I know Meghan would love for you to be at our wedding. Please come. I will pay for
your way here, a place to stay, and your way back if that’s what you want. I want to
surprise Meg with your visit. I know she will be happy with you there.

                                     Your friend,
                                    Luke Saunders

Luke addressed the envelopes and put the letters in his desk drawer just as Meg walked into the shop.

Buck walked into the barbershop for a trim. The last time he had walked in, he had come at an inconvenient time. He walked in to see Meg tell Luke that she loved him and then kiss him. He walked out before they noticed him. At the time he longed for someone to tell him that they loved him. That had happened, but the circumstances surrounding Caly telling him how she truly felt about him were not what he wanted. He now knew that she loved him, but he had thought she was just a good friend, but now he was confused. He needed to talk to somebody about it but who could he talk to?

This time when he walked in, Meg and Luke were just talking. "I say May 12." Meg was saying

"Whenever you want, Sweetheart."

"Luke, I would like your input!"

"May 12 is great, honey." Luke said as he looked past Meg and saw Buck walk in. "Hello, Buck. What can do for you?"

I was wondering if we could talk, I guess that will have to wait. Buck thought, but said, "I just need a trim."

"Ok"

Meg sat writing something while Luke cut the dead ends and splits ends off of Buck’s hair. It didn’t take long at all. When he was finished. Buck was about to pay Luke, but Luke said, "We’ll call it even if you’ll be an usher at my wedding on May 12."

Buck smiled, "Sure, I'd love to! I’m honored that you thought to ask me." Buck didn’t have to ask who, he knew that he was marrying Meg.

Luke smiled. After Buck left, Meg and Luke continued to discuss their wedding. "OK, we have Desi and Buck serving as attendants, right?" Luke tried to confirm.

"And I was going to ask Serena and Caly to serve as attendants, too."

"Ok." Luke smiled trying not to show Meg that he didn’t think he had that many friends in town to usher down her bridesmaids.

"I was also thinking about asking Jemima to be the flower girl."

"Oh, Meg, I think she would be perfect!" Luke said as he pulled Meg in for a kiss. "I think that Jemima will be a beautiful flower girl."

"Who are you going to get to be the ring bearer?"

"Ummm, I was thinking maybe Michael. And I thought about Teaspoon officiating. Since we don’t have a preacher. And since we don’t have a church, I thought maybe we could be married where we are going to build our house."

"Oh Luke! That’s perfect!" Meg exclaimed.

"Daniel said that C.J. Hudson was saying how he likes to design houses and buildings. I want you to come with me to ask him to design our house. You can tell him how you want it to look, how may rooms and all."

Luke decided to close up shop early, he knew that business was slow now but the closer they got to the Easter picnic, the more people would come in and the less time he'd have to plan their wedding. Leaving the store behind Luke drove the buckboard to their first destination, the SJ Ranch.

Meg knew that the last thing Caly would want to do is be in her wedding, but she wanted to include her. Meg wanted her to see that she was still loved by those around her. Luke pulled up in front of the house, tethered the horse to a hitching post and helped Meg down. Hand in hand the couple made their way to the front door, knocked and waited for someone to open it.

The door cracked open and Michael stuck his head out. "Oh, hi, Luke, Meghan."

"Hi, Michael, is your sister accepting visitors?" Meg asked.

"Hold on, I'll find out." Michael closed the door, leaving Luke and Meg on the porch. Moments later the door swung open and Michael ushered them in. "She's still not herself, but she said she'd see you."

"Thanks." Luke said. Michael led them into the small parlor. Caly sat on one end of the sofa, with an old beat up hat on. Luke noticed the fear in Caly's eyes as she saw him enter, and he decided to stand as far away from her as possible and let Meg do all the talking.

"Hi." Meg said. "How are you feeling, Caly?"

"Okay, I guess." Caly said sadly. "Please sit down, I'm glad you came to see me."

Meg sat on the other side of the couch, knowing from experience that she wasn't ready for any close contact. "Well I'm here to ask you something, too." Meg began. "Luke and I are getting married in about six weeks, and I'd like you to be a bridesmaid."

"You wouldn't want me I'm dirty."

Meg shook her head. "You're not dirty, Caly. Don't ever think that. What happened to you is not your fault. And as far as not wanting you, I would've never asked if I didn't want you there."

Caly looked from Meg to Luke and back again. "Everyone will stare at me, and talk about me behind my back."

"Everyone doesn't know what happened to you, and you can bet that those of us who do know won't ever say anything about it. Caly, no one will know unless you want them to. I understand if you don't want to do this, I won't be angry. I know it's a long road to healing yourself. If it makes it any easier for you, we've asked Buck to be an usher and he's agreed. We could pair you up with him." Meg waited anxiously for her answer.

Caly thought for a few minutes. "Alright, I'll do it."

Meg smiled, "Really? Oh, thank you Caly."

Luke took the moment to turn to the young man standing next to him. "So Michael, how'd you like to be in our wedding, too?"

"Are you serious?" He asked, awed by the thought of it.

Luke smiled, "Sure am. I got a very important job for you. I need you to carry our wedding rings down the isle for us. We’ll put them on a pillow for you to hold."

Michael turned to his sister. "Did you hear that Caly? I'm gonna be in the wedding, too."

"Well we better be going." Meg said as she stood up to leave. "I will come by to let you know all the details in a few days." She said to Caly.

"Alright." Caly said as she followed the couple to the door. "Meghan?"

"Yes?"

Caly hugged her tightly. "Thank you so much." She whispered.

Meghan returned the embrace with as much vigor as she had received. "It'll be okay. Trust me." Pulling away Meg whispered, "If you ever want someone to talk to, day or night, I'm here for you." Caly nodded and watched as Luke and Meghan headed back into town.

On the way back into town, Luke suggested they find CJ to ask him about the house plans. As they passed the livery, Luke remembered he had wanted to ask Justin to be an usher. Pulling over he saw that Justin was talking to Eddie from the hotel. Well this kills two birds with one stone, he said to himself. Luke excused himself from Meg and walked over to the two men.

Justin saw Luke approaching and smiled. "Well? How'd it go Luke?" Justin turned to Eddie, "Luke has decided to leave Dreamville with one less bachelor."

Luke turned to look at Meg, who smiled in return. "She said yes." Justin and Eddie congratulated him. "I'm glad you asked, it seems I'm here on official business."

"Do you need something for your horse or the shop?" Justin asked.

"No, I'm here to ask if you two will be ushers in my wedding."

The two men looked at each other and then back at Luke. "Yes." They said at the same time. Luke let out the breath he was holding. He wasn't sure who he'd turn to if they had said no. "Thanks, I appreciate it."

"No problem, Luke, it's our pleasure. You just make sure you keep that girl of yours happy." Eddie said.

"I'll do my best. Well, I best be going, we still have a lot to do." Luke said as he turned to leave. The men all said their farewells and minutes later Luke and Meg were on their way to see CJ. Riding through town, they spotted Teaspoon in front of the sheriff's office.

"Luke stop. There's Teaspoon. We should tell him about our plans." Luke pulled up in front of the Sheriff. Teaspoon looked up at them and smiled. They really do make a cute couple he thought. He knew they'd be surprised the night of the picnic to find the entire town celebrating their engagement.

"Hello, Luke, Meghan." He tipped his hat at her. "Is everything okay?"

"Yes, everything's fine." Luke said. "Uh, Teaspoon do you have a minute?" Teaspoon nodded and Luke continued. "Well, I've asked Meghan to be my wife and she's accepted."

Teaspoon pretended to be shock, "Well you don't say? Congratulations you two. You'd be the first couple to ever be married in Dreamville." The couple smiled at each other, neither of them realizing that fact. "So what can I do to help?"

"Well you could marry us." Meghan said. "There's no preacher in town, so we figured you could do it. We'd like the ceremony to be held out in Willow's Bluff. Luke bought some land there and we figured we could make it real nice."

"Well of course. I'd be happy to marry you two."

"Thanks Teaspoon." Luke said. After saying their good-byes, Luke looked ahead and saw Serena sitting in Daniel's buckboard in front of Cromwell's. "There's Serena," he said. "We're running late, your father promised he'd come and help with picking out lumber for the house."

"Well, pull up to them, we will only be a little while with CJ and they can come too." Luke did as Meg suggested, and pulling out the letters he had written, excused himself and went inside to post them.

Meg stepped off the buckboard and went to her stepmother and explained what they had been doing all day. Thinking Luke had come out the two women turned when they heard footsteps coming out of the store, but instead of Luke it was Jemima and Destiny who had exited.

"Uh-oh." Jemima muttered as she saw Meg.

"Hello, Miss Jones." Meghan said to the woman, then nodded to the young girl beside her. "Jemima."

"Hello, Miss Thomson. How are you?" Destiny asked.

"I'm doing well, thank you. I was wondering if I could ask you a question?" Destiny nodded and Meg continued. "I'm getting married, and I'd like Jemima to be my flower girl. That is if it's okay with her."

Destiny looked down at her young daughter who returned her gaze questioningly. "It's okay with me, if you want to." Jemima thought for a minute. "I thought you didn't like me."

Meg smiled, remembering the fight they had had in the store. "Well, I do like you. I'm sorry for yelling at you. I was going through a tough time. So what do you say? Would you like to?"

"What do I have to do?"

"Well you'd get to come down the aisle in a pretty dress and drop some flower petals."

Jemima loved the idea instantly. "Okay, I'd like to be in your wedding."

"Wonderful! I'll let you know all the specifics soon. We're still trying to figure everything out."

"Okay." Jemima said.

Destiny smiled at Meghan. "Thank you for asking her to do this."

"Thank you for allowing her to do it. I better get going. We'll talk again soon."

"Good-bye, Meghan."

Meg waved at the mother and daughter and turned back to her stepmother. "Serena, can you post these letters for me?" She asked as she handed Serena four letters. Serena glanced at the addresses. Two were going to Meg's grandparents in Boston, one was to Corey and the last was addressed to Luke's parents.

"Luke doesn't know you've written to his parents does he?" Serena asked as she put the letters in her reticule.

Meg shook her head, "No, I'm sending for them as a wedding present for him. I'm glad Daddy agreed to lend me the money until I can get my trust fund money." Serena smiled, this was Meghan's first attempt at independence, and she glowed when she had told her parents of her idea to buy the passage for Luke's parent to come to see them get married.

"Oh! I almost forgot to ask the most important person to be in the wedding." Just then Luke and Daniel came out of the store and joined them. "Who's that?" Serena asked. Meg glanced at Luke and the two smiled at each other knowingly. "You." Meg said. "I'd like you to be my Matron of honor, Serena."

Serena was speechless and looked wide-eyed at the couple. "Are you sure you wouldn't want someone else?"

"I can't think of a better person to do this. If it wasn't for you, we'd never have met each other." Luke said.

"Will you do it?" Meg asked.

"Of course I will. I'd be honored, but what about Corey?"

"What about her?" Meg asked.

"Well, I'm sure you would've preferred to have her stand by you."

"The more I think about it, the more I'm certain no one would be more perfect in this role. If Corey were able to be in the wedding without the risk to her job, I would've like for her to be my maid of honor, but that's not likely. I'd just be happy to have her here." Luke smiled to himself, and neither he nor Meghan saw the conspiratorial grin pass from Daniel to Serena.

Serena's eyes watered, "Thank you, Meghan." She wiped a tear as it slid down her cheek. "Now we've got a lot of work to do, and it won't get done if we stand around crying in front of the general store."

Daniel nodded and gave his wife a supportive hug, "Simon says CJ is in the saloon. We'd better head on over and talk to him about your house." The four headed towards the saloon.

Stepping into the Saloon, Luke spotted CJ sitting at a table alone. Placing a guiding hand on the small of Meghan's back, Luke guided her to CJ and introduced them. CJ saw Daniel and greeted him and Serena as well. As the four sat down, Desi came by, smiling she said a quick hello to Meg and took their drink orders. CJ looked at the group expectantly, "So what exactly can I do for you?"

Meg smiled. "Well Luke and I are getting married, and we were hoping you could help us design our house."

"It'd be my pleasure." CJ said flirtatiously. "Any ideas on what you'd like?" All eyes turned to Meghan.

"Well now that you ask, I do." She began. "It has to be two stories high, four bedrooms, kitchen, dining room and parlor."

"Don't forget the study." Luke said. Meghan arched an eyebrow questioningly. "For when you go back to school, you'll need a place to do your studies." He explained.

"Oh, Luke, really? Do you mean it?" Meg said excitedly.

"Of course. My wife is going to be a doctor." Meg's eyes welled up with tears. Luke placed a hand to her cheek and wiped a lone tear as it slid down her cheek. "Don't cry sweetheart. Did you doubt I'd let you go."

Meg shrugged, "I hadn't even thought about it."

Daniel flinched and Serena placed a hand on his arm, silently asking him to keep quiet. "Don't ruin this for her." She whispered loud enough for him to hear.

Blushing Meg turned back to CJ who had stood silent throughout the tender exchange. "Uh . . . back to the house." She said. "In the master bedroom I'd like a story window, where I could sit and read or look out at the stars, and a fireplace, too. There should also be a fireplace in the parlor and study. I guess we'll have boilers in the rest of the rooms."

"What about the outside of the house?" CJ asked.

"I'd like to have a porch swing and a balcony outside the master bedroom. It should be white with blue trim." Meg took a breath and looked at the group who were all staring at her in wonder. "Is it too much?"

Luke shook his head and laughed. "No, I'm sure we can do it all. You'll see it'll be fine. Willow Manor will be the grandest house in all of Dreamville." He turned to CJ, "Can you handle all of that?"

"Sure can." He smiled. "Willow Manor huh? Nice name. We can get started as soon as you're ready. We'll have to go the lumber mill and see if we can get you a good price on the lumber, this is a big job and the sooner we get started the better."

Luke nodded, "We can start right away if that's okay with you." CJ nodded and the group got up to leave. Meg and Serena took Daniel's buckboard and headed back home to start supper for the men, they knew they'd be tired after beginning the house.
