JANUARY 25, 1860
Javier had asked her to have supper at his house. She’d never gave love a second thought when she came to Dreamville, but now, she was willing to embrace it with open arms. He was everything she’d wanted in a man, but never had found. Then again, it was hard to find that in the clients she’d had to serve, and definitely not in Marcus. She wanted to impress Simon. There was something about him that told her he knew of her past, and that frightened her. She wanted him to like her for who she was now, not who she was before.
The dressmaker was a little busy. She’d dropped off a dress to alter a couple of days ago, and now, she wanted it to wear at supper. Simon came from the back room, having dropped off some bolts of material.
"Afternoon, Mister Cromwell," she greeted.
"Ma’am," he replied, looking into her eyes.
"Can I ask you something?" Lilly began. "I need your help."
This interested Simon, "Of course," he answered.
She took a deep breath. "I was wondering if Javier liked brownies."
Simon gave her a quizzical look. "Um, yes. Why?"
Lilly smiled. It wasn’t the question she wanted to ask, but she had lost her nerve. "I was going to bring some over for after supper."
The man smiled. "That would be nice."
"Great. I’ll see you later, then."
Simon smiled politely, and tipped his hat. Lilly watched as the man left. She’d wanted to ask him if he knew her. If he thought badly of her, and if he did, why. She’d give herself time to get to know Simon and Javier. If he did know, she’d find out soon enough.
