ARRIVING HOME

FEBRUARY 14, 1860

When Lee got to the bunkhouse, she put the pair of gloves up that she had bought at the fundraiser. She had bought Jimmy a pocket watch and she had bought herself an emerald broach that was lined with gold leaves. She would wear the broach tonight.

She waited at the pond for about 30 minutes before Jimmy rode up. When he dismounted his breath was taken away at her beauty. The full moon shining down on the water gave her the appearance of an angel.

They danced for an hour or so to the music from their memories of the dance in Denver. Then Jimmy gave Lee a silver bracelet and told her it was her Valentine's present. She gave him the pocket watch that she had bought at the dance.

As they walked around the pond in a comfortable silence. Jimmy's mind went back to something that happened at the dance right after Lee left. "Uh, Lee, I need to tell you something."

Lee could tell that Jimmy thought this was important. "What is it?"

"Um," He stuttered. He wasn't quite sure how to tell her this, so he just came out and said it. "Um . . . After you left, Umm. Do you remember Catherine from the hotel?"

"Yes." Lee said holding her breath. She could tell that Catherine liked Jimmy in the same way that she liked him.

"I met her after you left and she was having problems to mount her horse and I went to help her. I think she is crazy or something because she yelled at me and got mad. She suddenly followed me when I was walking back inside and she grabbed my arm and when I turned around, she kissed me." He held his breath and waited for the storm to hit that he knew was brewing inside Lee.

Lee was calmer than anyone would have expected. While she hadn't told Jimmy out loud that she loved him, she did. And she knew that he loved her, but it could be that he didn't love her the same way she loved him. But it still hurt that he was standing there telling her that he kissed another woman. "You kissed her?"

"No, she kissed me."

That was a relief. "Then why are you telling me?"

"Because I don't want there to be any secrets between us."

Lee just stood there stunned. He cared for her enough to tell her something that she might not have never found out to begin with.

"Lee, what we have, doesn't come along every day."

"What we have? Tell me, Jimmy, what do we have?" Lee asked wondering just what Jimmy was referring to.

Jimmy didn't have to think twice about his answer. Matter of fact if he had thought about it, he wouldn't have said it. He wondered why he had said it even as it was coming out of his mouth. It was the truth, but after what Marcus had done with that book of his, he thought he would never get to tell a woman, "I love you."

Lee's eyes filled with tears of joy. She honestly thought that she would never hear Jimmy say those words to her. "I love you, too"

With that Jimmy held her face in his and kissed her passionately. The kiss once again almost led to something that they both wanted but was afraid that the other wasn't ready for. It took all their self-control to stop before it went any further.

When they walked into the bunkhouse, the others had already gone to sleep, so they just slipped into their bunks and went to sleep. They both felt better knowing that the other one knew how they felt and that their feelings were mutual.
