AT THE VALENTINE'S DANCE! FEBRUARY 14, 1860 |
| At the Dance the Supper Plates were selling great! The Cajun Gumbo that
Kathleen had made was great! Spicy but great! But the time came when they ran out and Jacy
told Lee that she could go find someone to dance with. The problem was the one that she
wanted to dance with was dancing with a 13 year old little girl that happened to be Jacy's
sister. And here she was dressed and acting like a man. She just decided to watch the
dance from the outside of the corral. Jimmy saw Lee all alone, and he forgot about the drinks he had intended on getting and went to talk to her. She was leaning on the corral fence. You could still hear the music from where they were standing as they both moved back into the shadows so nobody could see them. "Hey." "Hey." She answered back. "What's wrong?" "What makes you think anything is wrong?" "Well, you mean besides the fact that you're out here alone staring off into the darkness. You do that when you're worried or sad." "You know me too well, Jimmy Hickok." Lee smiled. "So what's wrong?" "I was just thinking about the fun we had in Denver." "Ah. Ive been thinking about it too." "Melissa looks like she's having the time of her life." "Yeah, well . . ." Just then a slow song started to play. "Miss, Etheridge, may I have the pleasure of this dance?" Lee's eyes sparked as she said, "Yes, you may." As they awkwardly started to dance, Jimmy asked "Do you remember that dress you had on that night in Denver?" "Yeah. What about it?" "After were home, you could change into that and we could go down to the pond . . ." "Why, Mr. Hickok. Are you suggesting that we go off alone?" Jimmy thought about it and lost himself in the blue sea of her eyes. "Yes, I am. I just thought that we had so much fun on your birthday, maybe we could try to recreate it." "You know, Jimmy, I don't remember going back to the hotel after the dance." Jimmy smiled he remembered all to well what happened after they got back to the hotel. And what almost happened. He was determined not to take advantage of her being drunk and it took all the strength he had to tell her no. He was glad that she didn't remember that. He knew she wasn't usually like that, and it had to have been the wine that she had that night. "Well, what do you say? Are we going for a walk after we get home?" "How about I just go on home now, and you meet me at the pond? That'll give me time to get ready. "Ok." Jimmy smiled. "Just tell the others that I have a headache, and I went on home." "Ok." I'll get to the pond as soon as I can after the dance." "See you then." Lee said as the song ended and she left. Maybe this day would turn out ok after all. |
