JANUARY 15, 1860
When Jimmy went inside the house, Rachel was waiting for him. "I got it right here. Are ya'll ready to go?"
"Almost. Lee is getting the horses ready. We should be back by the end of the week. That should give her time to spend with Lynn on their birthday. Oh and thanks for picking up her present for me."
"Well, I was in town picking up my own present for her. Give this to her for me will you?"
Jimmy took the small package and put it in his pocket, that was his gift to Lee. Then he took the large brown package and tucked it under his arm and went to grab his bedroll. He hoped that this ride would be something special for Lee. Lee did not know about the side trip to see her twin.
"Are we ready to go?" Lee asked when Jimmy approached the horses. She saw him putting something big in his saddlebag, but decided against asking about it, after all he was the one with the package that Teaspoon wanted delivered.
"Yep. We better get going if we want to get there before dark."
With that they rode out of the station with Rachel calling, "Ride Safe!"
The ride there was uneventful. But Jimmy could tell that Lee was preoccupied. He had a pretty good idea of what was on her mind. She had told him the other day about her birthday coming up and all she wanted was to be able to see her sister on her birthday, but she knew that was impossible, Lynn couldn't get away from school and she couldn't get away from work. Jimmy had went to Teaspoon asking if Lee could have the time off to go see "his" sister for their birthday. Teaspoon had told him that he could go with Lee to see Lynnette after they delivered an army package for him, he needed an extra gun on this one, and they could take their time getting back. Teaspoon thought that should give Lee a few days with "his" sister.
After they got to the fort, Jimmy gave the package to the Colonel that he was supposed to and the army put the "boys" up for the night. The next morning, Jimmy and Lee were once again on the trail. While watering the horses Jimmy let Lee know that they weren't going straight home.
"Lee, how about we take a side trip?"
Lee thought about this, but she didn't know what Jimmy had in mind. "Don't we have to get back?"
"Nope. Teaspoon said we could have a few days off. I thought we could spend them together, that is if you don't mind."
Lee thought about this for a few minutes. If Teaspoon was going to give her a few days off, she would really like to see Lynn, after all they had never been separated on their birthday before. But at the same time, she could tell that Jimmy had something special in mind. "Well, where were you thinking of going?"
"Well, I was going to save it for a surprise, but knowing you, you'll go without me. I was
thinking about going to Denver."
Lee's face lit up as she threw her arms around Jimmy. "Thank you!"
"I take it you want to go?"
"Of course I do! How did we get the time off?"
"I told Teaspoon it was your birthday and that you wanted to see your sister. That's when he told me about taking the package to the fort. He said he could use another a gun and since Denver's not too far away from here, we just take our time getting back."
"Thank you."
Jimmy looked around and seeing no one leaned in to kiss Lee fully on the lips. "Happy Birthday."
"It will be now, thanks to you."
"I didn't do anything. Teaspoon was the one who gave you the time off. I just told him that your birthday was coming up."
"Thank you"
"Come on, if we're going to make it to Denver before supper we better get going."
"Ok," she said as she kissed Jimmy again.
When they made it into Denver, they decided to check in at the hotel before surprising Lynn. However, there was just one room left.
"The bed's big enough for the both of you."
"Cmon you gotta have another room." Jimmy complained.
"Nope mister, just the one room."
"We'll take it." Lee said as she just looked at her riding companion. What the hell, we share a room at the station. She thought as Jimmy paid the hotel clerk and got the key. Lee grabbed the key and started up the stairs to the room.
"Uh, Sir," The hotel clerk said trying to get Jimmy's attention. "The room comes with a bath do you want it now or later?"
Jimmy thought a minute. "Now would be good." He said with a smile. While Lee is taking her bath, I can go out and get some flowers for her and a small gift for her sister too.
He went upstairs to give Lee her gifts so she could get ready to see her sister. They would go see Lynnette, and then they would all three go out to dinner. When he went inside the room, he saw Lee putting her saddlebags into a dresser drawer. He started walking around the room nervously. Why am I nervous? This is no different than sharing a bedroll out on the trail. He thought as he remembers the ride that he had comforted her from nightmares on.
"I wish you would have told me we were coming to Denver, I would have brought my dress."
"Well, you haven't opened up your present from Rachel and the rest of riders yet either."
Jimmy replied handing her the big package she saw him put into his saddlebags before they left the station.
"What's this?" Lee asked taking the brown package.
"Um, open it and find out." Jimmy smiled.
Lee sat on the bed and opened the gift. It turned out to be an emerald green taffida dress. It was trimmed in black lace and it had a sweetheart neckline. There was some black lace gloves that would meet the dress sleeve once it was put on. "This is gorgeous! How did you know that I wanted this dress?"
"Rachel and I saw you looking at it in town, so Rachel and others went in together to get it for you. I got you this." He said as he handed her the two small packages that he had in his pocket.
As she opened the first jewelry box, she saw pearl like ear bobs. She was speechless when she saw the ear bobs, but the gold locket on the gold 18 inch chain that was in the other jewelry box, made tears of happiness come to her eyes. "Jimmy, these are beautiful." She said not taking her eyes off of them. Before Jimmy could answer her, there was a knock on the door. That would be your bath. I've got some things to go pick up. I'll be back in an hour or so."
"Ok. Oh and Jimmy," Jimmy turned to face Lee and she pulled him into another kiss. "Thank you."
"You're welcome." He said as he left and the attendants bringing in the tub and hot water
walked in.
As Lee took her bath and changed, Jimmy went to get something for Lynnette, what he was going to get her, he didn't know.
As Jimmy walked around trying to figure out what to get someone he had never met, but had heard an awful lot about, he saw a stationary kit that he thought would be perfect. He knew that the girls wrote to each other every week if not more than that. So he got Lynn the kit with flowers on the paper and envelopes. It also came with a new pen, and ink well, and some ink. It even had a stamp with a seal and a block of wax to seal the envelope shut. The seal on the stamp in this particular kit was two fawns, twin baby deer.
After he paid $2.00 for it he paid $1.00 for it to be wrapped. After walking around the town of Denver for about 45 minutes, he decided it was time to go back to the hotel. He stopped by a nearby field that had the most beautiful carnations in it and picked some flowers for Lee. He hoped that she would like them. They were yellow and they would match her dress perfectly.
Lee was dressed in her new dress and had her new pearl ear bobs on. She was trying to put on the locket, when Jimmy walked in. "Let me do that." Jimmy offered and stood behind her and put the necklace on her. They stood there smiling at each other in the mirror for a few comfortable minutes. Something snapped them out of the stares and an awkward moment descended on them.
"Uh, we better go."
"Yeah I made reservations at the restaurant for 7. And we still need to pick up Lynn. Do you need to go get her a present?"
"Uh yeah I do." Lee said.
As they walked along the sidewalk, Lee saw a cameo broach that she knew her sister would love. They went in and bought the broach for $5.
Lynn was getting ready for her date. A few of her friends had sat her up for a blind date. After all it was her birthday and Lee wasn't able to be here so she had agreed to go out with this man. She had on the navy blue dress she had brought just for tonight. From what she was told he was going to pick her up, take her out to dinner and then they were going to go to a town dance. Lynn's heart skipped a beat when she heard a knock at the door. The man on the other side was handsome, but he looked a lot more like Lee's type not hers. She was about to say something when Lee stepped out from behind him.
"Lee! What? How? Oh, it doesn't matter. I'm just so glad you are here. Please come in." I can't believe she made it. This is the best birthday ever.
Lee stepped forward and gave her sister a hug. "It is good to see you too, Lynn. Oh, Lynn, this is Jimmy. Jimmy this is my twin Lynnette."
Jimmy looked at both girls carefully. They looked almost the same. Well, at least I now know what Lee would look like if she let her hair grow. "Lynn, Lee and I wanted to take you out for dinner, if that is alright with you."
"Yes, that sounds great." The knock on the door reminded Lynn that she was unable to accept the invitation. "But I can't go. I didn't know you were coming so I made plans. It would be rude of me to cancel on Andrew. I'm sorry."
Jimmy smiled, "Well, if that is the only reason you can't go, why don't we just ask Andrew to join us?"
Lee and Lynn both smiled and nodded as Lynn opened the door. "You must be Andrew."
"Yes, and I take it that youre Lynn." Andrew handed her the flowers he was holding. "Here, these are for you."
"Thank you. Please come in. Andrew, I hope you don't mind but there has been a change in plans. This is my sister, Lee and her friend, Jimmy. I don't get to see Lee much and she came into town for our birthday, we're twins, and they wanted to know if we would go to dinner with them. I hope that is OK with you."
"Sure it is. As long as we still go to the dance afterwards. Jimmy, Lee, I hope you will agree to join us there."
Jimmy nodded as Lee stated that they would love to go. With that the four headed off.
The restaurant in Denver was more expensive than the one in Dreamville, but Jimmy didn't mind, Lee was worth it. They had wine at this restaurant, and since Jimmy said that no one around knew that they were Pony Express riders and they were not working, but on vacation, he wouldn't tell anybody if she decided to get some of the wine. So they both had wine with their meal. The total for the meal, desert and drinks came to $3.50 and Jimmy left a .35 cent tip for the waitress.
After supper, they all went to the dance. Jimmy was made to leave his guns at the door. Lee had a great time being able to be herself. Jimmy found out what a great dancer she was. He wasn't too bad of a dancer himself.
Sometime during the night, Lee
