AUGUST 28, 1860
Lee was in town running some errands, so she decided to stop and tell Jimmy hello. Jimmy was happy to see her. "Boy I'll be glad to get back to the station." Jimmy mentioned while they were talking.
Lee smiled. She'd be glad to get back as well. Teaspoon still hadn't said anything, so she wasn't sure if she still had a job or not, but having more time with Jimmy was definitely a plus.
After she left the saloon, she saw Caller Bob walking down the sidewalk. "Caller Bob, here's the money for Jimmy to get back to the station, but please don't tell anyone who paid it."
"Ok," Caller Bob promised.
When she got back to the ranch, she saw Michael and Caly on the swing. "Well, hello." She smiled.
"Someone paid for us to come home." Michael offered.
"Great!" Lee enthusiastically said. "Now if someone would just pay for me."
"Don't worry, I'm sure someone will pay for you soon." Caly smiled.
That night, Caly and Lee both woke up with nightmares. Lee, out of habit, pulled on some clothes and walked out onto the porch. Caly was on the swing already. "You can't sleep either?"
"Nope." Lee answered. "Do you still have nightmares?"
Caly nodded. "That's why I'm out here. You have a nightmare, too?"
"Yeah, every once in a while. Usually Jimmy follows me outside."
"What are your nightmares about?"
"Sometimes snakes. I'm deathly afraid of them." Then she paused, wondering if she should tell Caly about the Williams Brothers. As she sat down beside Caly on the swing, she decided that it might help them both if she did. "Mostly my nightmares are about something that happened on one of my rides though. Teaspoon has us all going out in pairs because the Williams Brothers were in the territory. Jimmy was the one that I was with. It was his ride really. I was the second gun. Anyway, as we set up camp, Jimmy went for supper. The Williams brothers showed up and recognized that I was a girl. They beat me up and were holding me down when Jimmy heard my screams. He killed them both when they told him to go find his own whore. Sometimes I dream it like it happened, but sometimes I dream that Jimmy wasn't there and nobody helped me."
"Which was it tonight?"
"The way it happened." I just wish Jimmy were here.
"I'm sorry if I caused your nightmares to come back."
"Caly, you didn't cause my nightmares to return." Lee consoled her friend. "As matter of fact, they never fully went away. They only come once in a while now."
Caly just nodded. She couldn't wait until her nightmares slowed down. "How do you deal with the nightmares?"
"Jimmy helps a lot. When he's not there, I remind myself of what really happed, and that Jimmy killed them both. I also remember that Jimmy and Kid both have taught me a lot since then, and I can better protect myself if I find myself in that situation again."
The two girls stayed on the swing talking and healing until the sun came up. After breakfast, Caller Bob and Jimmy rode up. "Lee," Caller Bob started. "Your bail has been paid."
"We have to go to Denver to deliver something for Teaspoon." Jimmy said.
"Denver huh?" Lee smiled. She'd be able to see her twin sister, Lynn, before they headed home. "Then I guess we'd better get started." She turned to Caly, gave her a big hug, and whispered, "Nobody but Jimmy knows about what I told you. Thanks for listening."
"Thank you for listing to me." Caly whispered back,
Without another word the two Pony Express Riders were on their way to Denver. Once they were out of earshot of everyone, Lee remarked, "I guess I'm not fired after all."
"I don't think so, but Teaspoon did say that he wanted to talk to us both when we got back." Jimmy said as they spurred their horses toward Denver.
