APRIL 26, 1861

Lee walked into Teaspoon's office and sat down in a chair. "Somethin' I can do for you, Lee?"

"Well, I, uh . . . went to see Steven this morning."

"Oh?"

"Yeah. You see ever since we all found out who Tally is and that he owns the new train, I've been frustrated that I can't be myself in public. That I have to be on guard all the time. And There was a few minutes there that we all thought that we might loose our jobs, and Steven said that we had a job with him, but then Tally walked up and said that he wouldn't be delivering any mail, so we had nothing to worry about. But this morning, I just couldn't take it anymore. I hate not being able to be myself in public. And Jimmy suggested that I go talk to Steven, and Steven said that I could work for him, even though I'm a girl. And I won't have to pretend to be something that I'm not." Lee was talking so fast that she was afraid that Teaspoon hadn't understood her.

"So when do you start working for him."

"He said I could give you as much notice as you needed me to."

"Well, I think I only need you for your next schedule run. When you come back you can go work for Steven."

"Thank you."

"Sure thing."

"Oh, uh one more thing."

"Yes?"

"Uh, I've come to think of all the boys as brothers and Rachel and Grace as sisters. Is there any possible way I could still stay at the station?"

"Well, I think that there is an empty room in Rachel's house you can use." Teaspoon saw Lee's disappointment. "I think that would be best. We wouldn't want any awful rumors to start, now would we?" Teaspoon explained.

"No we don't want that. Thanks Teaspoon."

"Anything else?"

Lee shook her head, "No."

"OK, then let's go eat."

When they got to the station, Lee and Teaspoon walked into the house and sat at the table. Lee hadn't been home since she had left to go talk to Steven, and Jimmy was worried until she walked in with Teaspoon.

"How'd it go?" He asked her.

Lee nodded and smiled.

"Boys," Teaspoon began, "From now on, you will have more runs."

There was a round of moans and Lee spoke up. "I'm taking Steven up on his job offer."

There was a stunned silence. Jimmy was afraid that some of them might be mad at her for leaving them with more rides, so he spoke up, "Don't be mad at her, I told her to go talk to Steven."

"But he only told me to, because I was upset that I couldn't be myself in public. I consider everyone here my family, and I didn't want to make ya'll have more work, but I just got to a point where I couldn't handle not being myself all the time." Lee stood up at the head of the table with Teaspoon pleading with her eyes for forgiveness.

"Lee, we all consider you family, too, and I think I speak for everyone when I say that we just want you to be happy. We can handle a little more runs, that's no problem." Lou said, wishing that she, too, could be herself all the time.

"It's about time you start acting like a girl." Cody said.

Lou, who was sitting beside Cody, and Lee, who was standing on the other side of him, both slapped him on the arm for that remark. Everyone else was happy for Lee.

"Oh, Rachel, I told Lee that she could stay in the house with you and Grace." Teaspoon said.

"Oh sure, I'd love to have you in the house, Lee." Rachel gushed. "When are you going to move in?"

"Right after her next run which will be her last run. We decided that would be best." Teaspoon smiled.

"Right." Lee grinned.

After supper, since it was raining, Lee and Jimmy could be found in the loft. Everyone knew that they were in the barn, but no one dared to go looking for them. Lee laid in Jimmy's arms listening to the rain fall. "I love to listen to it rain."

"Yeah, me too. Especially if you're in my arms." Jimmy agreed.

Lee smiled, "You know when I move into the house with Rachel, I'll have a room to myself, and we won't have to come out here."

Jimmy heard the sadness in her voice and commented, "No, I just have to sneak in without Rachel finding out."

Lee laughed.

"Of course if you ever want to come up here for old times sake, I would be willing. Especially if it's raining." Jimmy grinned.

Lee just smiled and snuggled closer to Jimmy, "Well, I for one can't wait until we can sleep in each other's arms all night without having to worry about if someone finds us."

"Me either. When do you think that will be?"

"Let's just wait a few weeks before setting a date, just to make sure that the job with Steven works out."

"OK."

"I still want to tell everyone I know that we're getting married though." Lee grinned.

"What ever makes you happy, Sweetheart."

"You make me happy."
