JUNE 21, 1860

Lara was walking around Broken Bow. She had the day off and had decided to check out some new scenery. She wandered through the shops just looking at first, but she couldn’t pass up buying a new dress, especially not after seeing the pretty ivory one in the dress shop window. She tried it on, and it fit perfectly.

She had lunch at the Wagon Wheel Hotel, and as she was leaving Lara saw someone she knew. Lara wondered why the lady was here and decided to find out. The lady had just come out of the restaurant across the street, so Lara crossed over to the other side and followed her down the boardwalk. Lara stopped in front of the dressmaker’s shop where the lady had went in.

Lara hesitated. Maybe she should just leave the lady alone, but she quickly changed her mind. She couldn’t think of any reason why the lady would not want her to know why she was here, so she turned the knob and entered. Lara saw the lady purchasing a bonnet. She walked up to her, and the lady turned around and saw Lara. Her pleasant smile became a scowl as she recognized Lara’s face. "Hello, Miss" Before Lara could finish the girl grabbed her arm. "Hey let go, what’s the meaning of this?" Lara angrily asked as she was pulled outside.

"Shhh!" The young lady replied as she put her finger to her lips. "Let’s go somewhere privately where we can talk. Come on." Seeing Lara’s reluctance she said, "Please." Baffled Lara followed her to a hotel room that the young lady obviously had for a long time, but Lara couldn’t understand why she would have a room here in Broken Bow when she already had a home.

The young lady wanted Lara to leave Dreamville because she didn’t want anyone in Dreamville to find out about her living in Broken Bow. Lara liked Dreamville and her friends, and was unwilling to leave. They argued, and even though the young lady offered Lara some money to relocate Lara refused and stormed out.

Now unbeknownst to the two ladies a gentleman had been listening to them argue while standing in the hallway. When he didn’t hear any more shouting he disappeared down the hallway. As Lara was rounding the corner to the stairs, she ran right smack into the gentleman. "Ah!" She yiped and took a step backwards. She started to apologize, but abruptly shut up as she saw the man holding a gun in his hand. He touched his finger to his lips, and Lara swallowed her words. He directed her back the way she had come, and he opened a door to his room and motioned for her to enter. Terrified Lara backed up into his room. She didn’t want to, but she was afraid if she screamed or ran that he would shoot her.

"Turn around," he commanded sternly.

She slowly turned around, and as she did so, he hit her on the head with the butt of his gun. Right before she lost unconsciousness, she saw a picture of the young lady, who she had just finished arguing with, on the gentleman’s nightstand.
