INTRODUCING KID! |
| Kid sat on the porch of the bunkhouse, absently
fiddling with the fringing on his buckskin shirt, surveying all that his life had become.
He cast his mind back, remembering how he had drifted from town to town from the time he
was 14 and had reluctantly left Virginia. He loved the land of his birth, but with the
coming of a war it was almost impossible to find work anywhere. So he had done the only
thing that he thought he could do. He headed west, ready for adventure and the promise of
good hard work. He had traveled aimlessly and alone, picking up odd jobs along the way, until he had seen a for sale sign hanging on the barn of one of the ranches he found work at. He had been doing odd jobs there for a couple of days, when he saw the horse in question. A gentle natured paint named Katy, he had not hesitated, but had spent the last of his money purchasing her. He knew it was foolish but he couldnt help himself, he had to have her. So he had a horse, but no money and no job, a precarious situation indeed in the lawless land he was living. He had slept in the barn of Katys home ranch that night and the next morning he had ridden on, finding the small town of Dreamville. Smiling to himself he remembered riding into town and seeing the sign in the general store window for pony express riders. Knowing that he was a good rider he had shrugged his shoulders and presented himself to the town sheriff with a smile, eager to find himself a job. Soon there after he had found himself here, a part of the fledgling family, it seemed however, to him at least that everyone amongst his new family had a problem of their own, or a secret. That was fine with him though, he was here to do a job and make a little money, make himself and his horse a home. Teaspoon dragged him from his musings, gesturing to him from across the way. Jogging across to where his boss waited for him, he smiled when Teaspoon told him that there were some packages that needed to be picked up from the post office in town. He had an excuse to go and see Blyth. The young lady that worked in the post office had caught his eye the first day he had come into town, she was so beautiful and so sweet to him, he couldnt believe it. The other boys were giving him a ribbing about his feelings for the young lady, but he couldnt help it. It seemed that he turned into a bumbling blushing fool every time he saw her. He saddled up his beloved horse and checked his appearance in the mirror in Teaspoons room one final time before he rode into town, grinning to himself like an idiot. Any excuse to see Blyth he spoke to himself as Katy trotted off, hoping to impress her with his riding skills. |
