JUNE 28, 1860
Caller Bob had just walked out the front door and was going to feed his chickens when he saw a rider coming for a visit. They chatted for a few minutes, and the rider told Caller Bob what his reason was for coming out to his homestead so early in the morning.
The sun rose and the rider told Caller Bob that he had to get back to town. Caller Bob told the rider that he would deliver the gift card today, probably later this morning. The rider sped off for town, and Caller Bob went to work. After finishing his morning chores Caller Bob wrote up the gift cards.
Kid was sitting outside the bunkhouse thinking about riding into town to see Blythe since today was his day off. He looked up when he heard hoof beats. The rider coming in was Caller Bob. Kid grinned. He wondered what unlucky rider was going to get switched next.
Kid knew that Jimmy wasn't thrilled to be running the saloon, but Cody didn't seem to mind running the store. Kid had watched Cody in action a few days ago. Cody's tongue was slicker than a snake, and Kid thought Cody was born to be a salesman more than a rider.
"Good morning, Kid," Caller Bob said as he stopped in front of the bunkhouse.
"Good morning, Bob." Kid replied. Kid stood up as Caller Bob dismounted. Caller Bob held out his hand with a gift card in it.
Oh No! It couldn't be for me, Kid thought.
"Kid, I have a gift card for you." Kid frowned as he took the card offered to him. As he read it he couldn't believe his eyes.

"You don't have to do it, Kid, but it sure would help us out with raising the money to build a church." Caller Bob hoped his words would help convince Kid to do it.
"Well, if I don't do it, the other riders will tease me for a very long time, especially since Cody and Jimmy switched." After a short pause, Kid replied, "I'll do it."
"I'm heading over to the lumber mill to give this to Joshua now. You want to ride with me?" Caller Bob rubbed Promenade's neck.
"Let me tell Rachel what's goin' on, and then I'll saddle Katie and be right with ya." Kid answered and then started to the house. As he was walking there, Rachel came outside. He explained why Caller Bob was there, and Rachel understood why Kid was changing jobs. She would greet Joshua would he arrived and show him where Kid bunked.
Kid and Caller Bob rode over to the Bartlett Mill where they found Joshua talking with Drucilla. He had been out all morning supervising the crew, and now Joshua was getting ready to have lunch with Drucilla.
Caller Bob handed Joshua the gift card. Joshua didn't really mind switching jobs, but he didn't think Kid would slip into his role of lumber mill supervisor very easily, as he would at being a Pony Express rider. He told Kid what was expected of him as a foreman, and then told Kid that he could have his sleeping quarters at the boarding house. Kid informed Joshua that he had the day off. That made Joshua happy. He could use some extra time to help Tally with Jacy's new home.
So Caller Bob headed for town, and Joshua headed out to the Starshine Haven to continue working on the kitchen cabinets. Kid had lunch with Drucilla who filled him in with what work was going on, and then Drucilla took him out to meet the crew.
