MARCH 19, 1861

Kid breezed into the Westerville waystation. He handed off the mail to another rider. Then he swung down off of Katy to give her a rest before they headed back to Dreamville. While resting, Mrs. Carter brought Kid a glass of lemonade. "Thank you, ma'am." He sat down on the porch of the bunkhouse to drink it and Mrs. Carter stood and talked to him for a while. They told each other about what had been happening around their towns

Kid discussed the rodeo with Mrs. Carter. He told her that he would be entering the Calf Roping Contest. She told Kid about Frank, her dead husband. She told him that if Frank was alive today, he would probably enter every competition and win every one. She boasted about her husband's strength and courage until Kid asked where he was. She paused for a few minutes and then described how her husband had been a miner, and that one day the tunnel that they were working in had collapsed. She had never seen him again after that day. Kid felt sorry for her and told her so.

After a half an hour Mrs. Carter excused herself saying that she had to get back to work, so Kid stood up and thanked her again for the lemonade. She took his glass and went back to work while Kid did some thinking.

He thought about him and Blythe. He had a wonderful time with her at the graduation and Cupid dance. He really liked her. She's a wonderful person. Kid could see himself settling down with her someday, but first he had to save his money. He wanted to give her everything she deserved, a beautiful home and security. He didn't want her to have to work, but he wanted her to have everything she wanted. All that led to one thing, money. He would have to start saving all his money, and that's what he intended to do.

Kid finished his lemonade and walked around to get the kinks out of his legs. He went over and took Katy to the trough to drink. He then gave her a little hay from the barn. He rubbed and talked to her about Blythe, and when he thought that Katy was well rested, he mounted, and they rode off towards Dreamville.
