AUGUST 14, 1860

Kathleen was helping Jemima with her English paper when Serena walked in and asked, "Jemima, could you run down to the post office and get our mail please. I'm swamped right now and I'm expecting something important."

"Sure Serena," Jemima said thankful for the break.

"We could use the break, couldn't we Jemima!" Kathleen stated more then asked, "I need to see if I have any mail anyway." She continued.

As they walked back from the store where the post office is located inside. They had to pass the bordello. Kathleen saw Charlie and one of the women walking out onto the porch. She thought she heard someone call the woman Annette. Charlie was pulling one of his suspenders up onto his shoulder as he walked away from the door. Kathleen couldnt imagine why Charlie was there. She hoped that Jemima didnt' know why only men went in there.

As Kathleen and Jemima passed the front desk of the boarding house, Jemima said, "We had no mail, Serena."

"Thank you for checking for me. Where did you get the licorice?"

"Miss Boudreaux gave it to me."

"She's been working so hard. I thought she deserved a treat." Kathleen said sheepishly. She didn't like it when people called attention to her especially when she gave a gift for hard work.

"That was nice, thank you. How is she coming along?" Serena inquired.

"Well, we're still having problems with sentence structures, but she's coming along fine. I think she'll get it within the week. She's very eager to learn and that helps." Kathleen smiled.

Charlie, on the other hand was feeling empty. Sure he had just had some good loving but it was empty. There was no love involved just pure animalistic lust and desire. He wanted something more. Something like he had when he was in London. Ashley was beautiful, kind, intelligent, and she had loved him like he had loved her. When he made love to her, it was to please her, not just to please himself. When he left London, he asked her to come with him, but her father wouldn't let her. He asked her father if he could marry her, but he had refused to give Ashleys hand in marriage to Charlie, and Ashley wouldn't marry anyone without her fathers blessing.

Charlie wanted another relationship like that. He now realized that if he truly loved Ashley, he would have fought for her harder to have her fathers blessing. Would he ever find true love, so it wasn't Ashley he was missing. It was the relationship he had with her.

Ever since Charlie had left London, he had been the love 'em and leave 'em type, but now he wanted a relationship. Rachel seemed nice enough, but she wasn't ready for a serious relationship. At least thats what she had told him at the time he had talked with her. He wasn't looking for a relationship either, but after his visit with Annette, the sex wasn't filling that hole anymore. Maybe there will be a girl in town that will love him, but in the meantime, he will go to the bordello and take care of his manly needs. Even if it is empty, its better than nothin at all, or so he thought.
