MAY 28, 1861

Kathleen dismissed the children for lunch. Standing on the steps of the school, she smiled as she watched the children playing. She knew that the school and the playground equipment had weathered the storm pretty good.

Brianna and Jemima were on the swings when Kathleen heard a crack. Before she could reach the girls, the beam holding the swings snapped and sent the girls crashing to the ground. Horrified Kathleen saw the beam land on top of them.

Michael and Jesse heard the noise and saw the beam fall on the girls. They ran over to them. Brianna was crying and calling for Jemima to answer her.

Kathleen arrived at the same time as the boys. "Jesse, Michael, help me, let's try to get this off the girls." Kathleen, Jesse and Michael pulled and pushed, but the beam was just too heavy for them, so Kathleen said, "Jesse, Michael, go into town and get help." Michael and Jesse took off for their horses, and Kathleen shouted after them "Bring the doctor, too." The boys nodded as they continued to run for their horses. After mounting up, they raced into town.

As Kathleen tried to lift the beam, she turned to the girls, "Brianna, Jemima, just stay still. Help will be here soon."

Jemima slowly opened her eyes, "My legs hurt."

"Shh Honey, helps on the way. Brianna, you hurt?"

"Yes, Ma'am. My arm." Brianna answered through sniffles.

Kathleen talked quietly to the girls while waiting on help. To take the girl's minds off of their pain, they talked about the church that was going to be built.
