FEBRUARY 16, 1861

Kathleen rang the school bell. The kids came running into the school. They sat down at their seats and waited for Miss Boudreaux to start class.

"For the first part of the day I would like for you to write an essay on the Valentines Dance. Include in it whether or not you liked this years dance better than last years and why or why not. It should be at least 100 words. You get bonus points for every 50 words after that. You will turn it before recess."

Jemima whispered to Brianna, "I liked this years better because you were there."

"I liked this years better than the one I went to last year because I got to meet a lot of new people." Brianna whispered back.

"Jemima and Brianna, no talking. Do your work." Miss Boudreaux said to the girls. Ever since Brianna came to Dreamville, Kathleen had to get on to Jemima for talking in class, but it was Jemimas fault. She always started the conversation, and since it was just once or twice a day, Kathleen decided not to tell their parents. It was important for the two girls to build up a friendship.

Recess came and the kids turned in their essays and went outside while Kathleen graded the papers.

While they were outside Jemima and Brianna started talking once again. "You know Brianna, Im glad that you came to Dreamville."

"Im glad we came, too. Youre the best friend Ive ever had."

"Youre the best friend Ive ever had, too! I wish I had a sister like you."

"Me too." Then Briannas eyes lit up, "Hey, your mom is single and my da is single maybe we get them to marry each other then we really will be sisters!"

"Hey youre right!" Jemima said. And then they discussed how they could get their parents together.

Melissa is everything alright with Jacy? I mean she acts weird sometimes."

"I know. I just don't understand her ever since she came back to Dreamville. She's different, and she won't tell me why." Melissa sulked and went silent. Michael decided not to pursue the issue. Instead he picked up some snow, made a snowball and threw it at Melissa. He knew that a snowball would break her out of her sulking mood.

"MICHAEL JOHNSON!!" Melissa yelled as she stood up. She formed a snowball and retaliated. Michael knew she wasn't really mad. She was just pretending, and the snowball fight was on. Jesse joined in, and by the time the bell rang for them to return inside, all three of them were rolling in the snow laughing.

The school bell rang for them to go inside. As they sat down at their desks, they noticed that their papers had been graded. Everyone received a B or better for their grammar.

"Jesse, Im very proud of you. You have improved a great deal over the last few months."

Jesses face lit up and he told the class, "Well, Lees been helping me out." Then his face darkened, "before he forgot who he was and who we are."

"Before he got amnesia?"

"Yeah."

Kathleen could tell that Jesse was worried, so she tried to comfort him, "Well, Im sure his memory will come back soon."
